Our priority deadline for class proposals is coming soon so please act now if you're interested! Please share this opportunity with anyone whom you think might be a great fit for our program. To learn more, see our Call for Instructors. Please contact if you have any questions.

Claxton's Back-to-School Gardens and Grounds Workday--Save the Date!

Bring your family and friends to Claxton on Sat., Aug. 4th anytime from 9-1 to help our garden beds and grounds SHINE for the kick-off of our new school year! No garden experience is needed; just come prepared to HAVE FUN and to GET DIRTY! We'll be weeding, picking up litter, sweeping, pruning, repairing, and more. Please wear a hat and sunscreen and bring a water bottle. We'll supply light snacks and a water cooler to refill your containers. Email Tricia Johnson at if you have any questions. RSVP (optional) to our workday invite on Facebook--

An Invitation to Weed!

Please DIG IN! If you or your children are looking for a summer activity, feel free to visit the Claxton campus and find a spot to dig in the dirt and pull out weeds. Please leave the weeds along the sidewalk on Hill Street near our new little library where the city brush trucks can pick up the weeds and debris. Thanks for tending our gardens and grounds!

Elementary Battle of the Books '18-'19 Reading List

The 2018-2019 Elementary Battle of the Books list is out! Any and all interested 4th and 5th grade students are invited to participate and summer is a great time to get your read on. Check out the list and head to your public library. Happy reading!

Keep up the Reading!!!!

With summer in full swing, let your adventures soar through reading! Ms. Brown sent some wonderful resources and information home with students in their report card envelopes. At this mid-summer point, here's a refresher of what she shared--

Summer Reading Resources (sent home in green folders) -

Dear Claxton Families,

This summer I hope that our students have a chance to relax, to play with friends, to have fun with family and to READ A LOT! We have loads of research pointing to the importance of summer reading for maintaining or improving reading skills. Study after study shows us that when students continue to read over the summer and/or are involved in summer library programs they return to school with a “positive attitude about reading, are more confident in the classroom, read beyond what is required, and perceive reading as important.” (Fiore & Roman, 2010). Additionally, we know that the more students read the better readers they become.

We are lucky to live in a town with thriving free summer library programs at each of our 13 branches. Please find the attached reading lists and suggestions for summer reading programs, including the Pack Memorial Library summer reading program schedule and information on the Zoom program which gets library card holders into area attractions for free.

Enjoy your summer, Claxton families, and remember to READ, READ, READ!

With bounding book love,

Amy Brown

Claxton's NEW Little Free Library

Big thanks to Mr. Godleski and his student helpers for building Claxton's own Little Free Library! A special thank you goes out to kindergartner, Griffin Davis, for raising money on his birthday to contribute for the building materials needed. What a way to be a leader! The idea of a Little Free Library is to "take a book, return a book." Claxton families are welcome to stock the Little Free Library with reading materials and to see what delightful books they can find for themselves inside. Book donations can also always be sent in to Ms. Brown who will find enthusiastic readers to enjoy them. Happy reading!

Field Day SUCCESS!

Claxton's June Field Day was fantastic! Big thanks to Coach Swain and our incredible team of volunteers who contributed to this year's event! We could not have done it without your help and support!!!

Claxton Spirit Night

Thank you to everyone that came to our end of the year Spirit Night and Mini Crafty at Salvage Station. You raised $242.50 for Claxton just by having a good time! Keep your eye out for more Spirit Nights this fall.

Remember to Collect Your Box Tops this Summer to Support Physical Education at Claxton!

Please save your Boxtops for Education throughout the summer and bring them in when you return to school in August. You can place them in the bear container outside of the main office or in the gym. This will help us "kick off" the school year by providing funds for Coach Swain to buy new balls and other needed equipment for our P.E. program! Thank you!
