The Gator Gazette

Gator Greetings
I hope that everyone had a wonderful fall break and was able to relax and have some fun together. After a week off, the students came back eager to see friends and return to their school routine at Allisonville. As teachers were off relaxing and recharging as well, our facilities crew was hard at work on several projects at Allisonville. These included new carpet in the media center, painting throughout the school, parking lot prep for construction, and installation of The Butterfly Project in the cafeteria. Additionally, all students in grades 3-5 all got new Chromebooks with updated features such as a touch-screen pad.
Report cards will come home today with students. (Please note that there was a glitch with the Skyward system for attendance and tardies for some students.) Parent-teacher conferences will begin the next week. Your child’s teacher will be sending out a sign up soon for conference times. Our goal is 100% participation, as we know the home-school partnership is one of the keys to student success! November 2nd is an E-Learning Day for students to allow for teacher conferences. Your child will be bringing their device home for asynchronous learning and assignments will be posted on Canvas for students to access.
Next week, we will have October’s Gator Gathering on Friday, October 29th at 2:30 around the track. This will be the first time we get into our Gator Packs for a team building activity and we are so excited! Friday will also be a Gator Pack Dress Up Day and all students are encouraged to wear their pack color.

Join us outside around the track for food trucks, DJ, hayride, and a roaring bonfire. All families are welcome, and I look forward to seeing many of you there!

The Butterfly Project - Mrs. Hodson
In 2017, a dear friend of mine, who at the time was the President of Heartland Film Festival, reached out to tell me about a film called ‘Not the Last Butterfly’. He thought it would be perfect for the students at Allisonville and Washington Township. I very quickly learned that the film was part of a program called ‘The Butterfly Project.’ Here is their mission:
‘The Butterfly Project is a call to action through education, the arts and memorial making. It uses the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry and cultivates empathy and social responsibility. Participants paint ceramic butterflies that are permanently displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, with the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies around the world—one for each child who perished in the Holocaust, and honoring the survivors.’
With the support of administrators, faculty, parents, the PTO, and the Advancement Center, we were able to bring this program, along with the directors of the film, Cheryl Rattner-Price and Joe Fab, to our district. The student response was amazing! They embodied everything we want to see in the students at Allisonville. They were reflective, empathetic, inquisitive, compassionate, and most importantly driven to make a difference.
Over the past five years, 5th graders have participated in The Butterfly Project so now we have this beautiful mural of 600+ butterflies to remind us of the hope and resilience we all have within ourselves.

Dyslexia Screening
Indiana’s public and charter schools must meet added requirements to identify, as early as possible, struggling readers who show risk factors for dyslexia and then provide systematic, sequential, and multisensory instruction to meet their needs. All students in grades kindergarten through second grade will undergo a universal screener to check their skills in six different areas. These areas are: phonological and phonemic awareness (ability to separate and change sounds in words), alphabet knowledge (name different letters), sound symbol relationship (phonics), decoding (reading), rapid naming (quickly name common objects), and encoding (spelling).
Screenings will take place beginning the week of October 18. Parents will be notified if their student is recommended for further screening or interventions based on the universal screening results.
