ELA - Shared Reading
We will spend the first quarter focusing on Thoughtful Decisions.
Thoughtful Decisions explores that every day, students make thoughtful decisions that reflect self-monitoring as readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and active members of the classroom and school community. During the unit, students develop a repertoire of strategies to use when making academic and social decisions in their classroom and school.
We will use literature to spark student conversation as we look closely at the decisions the characters are making in the story. In addition to this, students will write responses to the texts we read together.
ELA- Spelling
WORD WALL WORDS:
These are commonly used words that we are practicing to spell and read in class. We like to call them “No Excuse Words.” Once they go on our word wall, we expect them to be spelled correctly in daily writing (no excuses!) We also expect these words to be read quickly and fluently.
WEEK OF:
* 9/8- the, down, up, like, got
* 9/15- to, a, can, you, friend

PHONICS / SPELLING: We will spend the week focusing on sound patterns through slate practice, spelling games, and formal written practice. Word lists are not provided, this is to help us see if the students are grasping the sounds rather then memorizing the word lists.

Math
In this first unit of Grade 1, students make significant progress towards fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers to 10 as they are presented with opportunities intended to advance them from counting all to counting on, which leads many students then to decomposing and composing addends and total amounts.
Students will understand that…
- Numbers are related and manipulated for real world problem solving.
- A symbol can represent an unknown number.
- Operations work to change numbers.
- Subtraction is an unknown addend problem.
- Counting is directly related to addition and subtraction.
- Using a variety of strategies will build fluency in adding and subtracting,
- The equal sign is relational and operational.
- A number of objects is represented by a written numeral.
- The last number you count tells the total number of items.
