Garfield School Family Bulletin

April 26th, 2020

Garfield Family Corner

Good morning, Garfield families,

Tomorrow, April 27th, we'll begin distributing technology to those families who are in need of laptops or iPads. Pick up will take place in the cafeteria which is accessed from the parking lot off of West 143rd. Due to the size of our school, we have implemented a staggered pick up time. Pick up times will be by grade level:

  • PreK - 2nd Grades: 1:30p - 2:30p
  • 3rd - 5th Grades: 2:30p - 3:30p
  • 6th - 8th Grades: 3:30p - 4:30p

To ensure everyone's safety, parents/guardians will be asked to wait outside along the sidewalk behind marked lines. At this time, you will be able to complete the Technology Agreement Form. Once inside, you'll be checked in at the first table, then you'll be provided a laptop or iPad. Currently, iPads are first reserved for our preschool, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students. If you have multiple students attending Garfield, you'll be able to collect up to two devices. Please note, we have not yet received the hotspots to access internet. The families who requested hotspots will be called directly when they arrive.

Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout the school closure. In this bulletin are additional updates and if you have any questions, please reply to this email.

Sincerely,

Jake Bosley

Parent Tip of the Week: Special Time In

Even with everyone home together 24/7, set aside some special time with each child. You choose the time, and let your child choose the activity. Just 10 or 20 minutes of your undivided attention, even if only once every few days, will mean a lot to your child. Keep cell phones off or on silent so you don't get distracted.

Garfield Teachers Do What It Takes!

Last week, Arotzarena, Reilly & Maynard visited all the preK students who did not receive a preK Lakeshore box. Thank you for taking the time to ensure our students are set up for success! 11 families who did not have transportation or were working during pick up time now have resources that they need because of this team. We appreciate all the teachers who have been delivering materials to families across Prek through 8th grade!

The Virtual Mrs. Fischer!

Mrs. Fischer has been preparing kindergarteners for 1st grade through Zoom lessons! Students have the opportunity to engage with their wonderful teacher each week. I'm confident that our kiddos will be ready for 1st grade next school year. Thank you, Mrs. Fischer!

Mrs. Reffner's 3rd Grade "Lifting Off"

It takes a special teacher to push a class full of 3rd graders to make reading fun and engaging while at home! Mrs. Reffner is not only promoting the love of reading, but she's incorporating art into her lessons. Thank you, Mrs. Reffner for always ensuring your class is engaged!

Cross-Curriculum Learning: 3rd-5th Style!

What's better than teaching math to 4th grade with Lisiewski? Having three other Garfield teachers join your session: Giermann, Reffner & Geftic joined in for an art lesson with some of their students. Thank you team but collaborating and making the best of this situation for our students!

The 'Best Bird of the Year' Goes To.... Mr. Goodwin!

Although class isn't in session, Mr. Goodwin still does what it takes to spread joy and Garfield Pride. Garfield is lucky to have such a passionate, energetic and dedicated teacher on the staff. Thank you for going above and beyond!

Creating Beautiful Works of Art

Even at home, our devoted art teacher can still have students produce beautiful works of art. Using an easel, computer and tremendous talent, our kids are still given the opportunity to be creative and curious. I also see a couple of fellow Garfield teacher participating, too. Nice work, team!

Read Alouds with PreK

Last week, I had the pleasure to read one of my son's favorite books to prek students. Seeing their little faces makes it even harder knowing we won't return this school year, but knowing that Garfield has such a loving and dedicated staff makes the experience much better. Thanks, team!
