McNear Kindergarten
Keeping us connected with 2020-2021 Updates
A Message from Our Teachers
May 27, 2020
Hello families!
We wanted to take a moment to reach out and let you know that we are looking forward to having your children in Kindergarten at McNear next year! We value our McNear community and have both been here for our whole teaching careers, Mrs. Sharp for 18, Ms. Elliott for 10. Together we bring a love of teaching and a lot of fun to Kindergarten! Many of you are new to McNear and we welcome you. To our returning McNear families...welcome back!
We had a dramatic shift this school year, with distance learning for the last few weeks. We miss being with the children terribly, but found great ways to connect. We loved seeing our students on Zoom, and they enjoyed seeing each other too. We had small group, whole class and whole kindergarten (45 students!) meetings each week. During those meetings we shared, taught science and literature, took virtual field trips to support our learning (and Disney World just for fun!), and even had a Variety Show where children performed for their peers. We used the app Seesaw to stay connected with assignments and activities (sent home prior). The students found Seesaw easy to use and we found it to be a great way to see the work happening at home. We are so thankful to our students and families for providing us with informative feedback too. Working together in this way has really solidified our love of the McNear community!
As we begin to think about the upcoming school year, we are thankful to have these distance learning weeks to reflect upon. We are also thankful that our Kindergarten classroom is large and can provide much needed space when we come together. Our beautiful Petaluma climate allows for flexibility in learning spaces. We love to be outdoors and are excited about the opportunity to incorporate McNear’s many outdoor spaces into our learning next year.
Over our years here, we have continuously been proud of how our staff and families come together in a variety of situations. We’ve seen our community support each other over the last few weeks and we’re so thankful to be a part of it! These are new and challenging times for all of us, and it’s so helpful to know we’re in this together. We welcome you and your children into our program and into our community and look forward to meeting you soon!
Warmly,
Freya Sharp and Lisa Elliott

Flexibility, Options and Opportunities
As this year comes to a close, we are assessing all that we have learned, streamlining and improving our tools, developing plans for flexible models that meet the diverse needs of all families weathering these seas, as well as harnessing opportunities for innovation, collaboration and positive change. We have a gifted site and district team developing the options outlined by Mr. Callahan.
Please complete the audit linked here by June 4th for each PCS student in your household, so that our district can make a plan to accommodate the needs of our students and families for the 2020-2021 school year. Your completion of this audit for each student will help us make very important decisions about these schooling options in the coming school year. Thank you in advance for your time.
