PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families –
Back in February, I wrote about the importance of on time daily school attendance. I let families know that we would be sending out letters to parents of students with excessive absences and tardies. I want to thank the families for responding to those letters and for helping their children improve their attendance. We need students here every day so that we can maximize their learning potential. We also need them to arrive on time, so that their days start off with their peers in their morning routines.
This week, I want to share with you our attendance data from 2015.2016. The data below is a report from the state, and it identifies a category called chronically absent. Students are considered "chronically absent" if they attended less than 90% of their enrolled days between the beginning of the school year and the first school day in May.
In examining the data, you can see the largest group considered chronically absent was our kindergarten class. We will be closely looking at our first grade class this year and we hope to see their attendance rate improve. While overall it appears we have a strong attendance rate, it is important to note that 51 students were chronically absent from school last year. If these students missed 10 percent of the year, this means they missed over 117 hours of school. Imagine what they could learn and accomplish if they were here each day.
So again, I am asking for your help. Please make sure students are here each day unless they are ill. Please make sure students enter through our doors by 8:28 am each day. School starts promptly at 8:30 am when we lock the doors to the classroom. We still have 51 days left of school. Let’s make each one count. Thank you for your support

This will be our last order this school year.
Bowling for Dollars: Stop in at SuperPlay (9300 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Beaverton) on Thursday, April 13, 4:00-7:00 pm and 50% of all the proceeds will go to the NRCO. Please check out the flyer link for more information.
Miles of Smiles: This fun exercise program runs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (weather permitting) starts back up next week! This program is during the kids' pre-lunch recess. If your child is not already signed up, you can complete the form linked below and return it to school. Volunteers are welcome! If you would like to help out, please email angie.kawaguchi@gmail.com or angela.montz@gmail.com for more information. If your child participates, please remind her/him to wear shoes appropriate for running/walking. Thank you!
Auction - Request: Our Art Show & Auction is quickly approaching (April 20) and we are looking for items for our auction. We are hoping someone has a vacation rental we can use... maybe Bend, Hood River, Sun River??? Please send an email to NRCO1@hotmail.com with "Auction" in the subject line if you have something to donate. It is really appreciated. Thank you!
Art Show & Auction: Thursday, April 20th, 6:00-8:00 pm. Please come view two pieces of your child's art on display, enjoy music by students, fun crafts in the gym, delicious ice cream floats in the cafeteria and amazing auction items in the gym. This annual event is loved by everyone! Please do not miss out. See you all there.
Art Lit: Our Artist for April is Beatrix Potter. She is best known for writing and illustrating children's books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tales of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. After 100 years, Beatrix books are still the largest selling children's stories in the world. Your children will create their own illustrations on watercolor paper with watercolor crayons. Enjoy spring time! Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Volunteer Opportunity: We are looking for a Co-Chair for our Art Lit program for the 2017-2018 school year. This is a great opportunity that does not require any artistic ability or knowledge. You would be assisting others so you will not be alone. It should be noted that without volunteers to run the Art Lit program, the program would not happen. PLEASE consider helping! If you want more information, please email NRCO1@hotmail.com and include "Art Lit" in the subject line. THANK YOU!
NRCO - Upcoming...: At our May 9, 9:00 am meeting, we will present our slate of board members for the 2017-2018 school year and vote on it in our June meeting. At our May meeting, we will also welcome guest speaker Principal Hess from Conestoga Middle School. We will also vote our the proposed budget present during our June meeting.
Green Committee: April 22 is Earth Day but we are celebrating all month long at Nancy Ryles. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! We are excited to announce that we will be reducing a HUGE amount of waste at our school. Beginning Monday, April 10, we will be starting a composting program in our cafeteria. We are looking for volunteers to help supervise the process of teaching students how to separate their food scraps from other garbage during lunch during the first few weeks of the program. You can signup for shifts by going to www.myvolunteerpage.com from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, April 10-21.
Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe Program: This is a great way to reuse worn out athletic shoes and keep waste out of landfills. Nike uses old shoes to create "Nike Grind" which can be turned into sport courts, athletic tracks, weight room floors, playground surfaces, and more. We will be collecting old athletic shoes during the month of April and donating them to Nike for this program. Please bring any used shoes to the school and place in the collection bins located in the entryway by Friday, April 28.
Fred Meyer: Do you shop at Fred Meyer? If so, you can get a Community Rewards card which can be linked to the NRCO so we can earn money. If you already have a card, you can still add the link. We are listed under "Nancy Ryles Community Organization" or by our non-profit #80197. IMPORTANT: If you previously did the link done, you need to re-establish it because of a software issue at the store.
ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY
Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey during the month of April! The survey helps us to evaluate our progress in educating your child and planning for the future. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey. The survey data will be summarized so that each person who answers will remain anonymous.
A link to the 2017 Annual Parent Survey will be sent to all valid parent email addresses via School Messenger on April 3, 2017. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 28, 2017. You can view a copy of the survey in both English and Spanish on the Research & Reports webpage.
