Agricultual Region: Fishing
Tyler Stonebrook
Orgins of Fishing
- Used as form or gathering for over 10,000 years.
- Humans first used spears to kill fish.
- Evolved to using bones as hooks and bait.
World Fishing Hotspots
Regional Hotspots
- China-Japan
- Morocco-Portugal
- Canada
- Peru-Chile
Commercial
Most fishing is now commercial use. Fishing is not a necessity for sustainable life besides in regions like Africa where food is available few and far between.
Important for LDC
- Not necessarily important for MDC's.
- MDC's use fishing mostly for commercial use.
- LDC's such as Africa need fishing the most because it brings in a source if food for them.
Effects
Possible effects of fishing include overfishing of regions. This effect could be relevant in the near future because of the sheer amount of fish that humans consume. Habitat destruction like dredging will also change the population of fish which would effect the yield of fish each year. In Japan they set quotas each year of over 700 Mink Whales for "research" purpose. This is becoming a large factor in the extinction of this whale because they are overfishing this species and never hit the quota anymore.

Personal Connection
Though I don't fish myself anymore there was once a time I would fish with my grandfather. We would go out on the boat on the same small pond for hours talking and raking in the fish. Soon enough, the fish ran out as a result of overfishing the area. We were out there so much that we would not catch anything anymore so, we went to a new location.
