Summer Newsletter 2021

Rolland-Warner 6/7 Campus

Stevens Scribbles

Welcome to the final newsletter of the year for Rolland-Warner! This newsletter serves both as a wrap-up for what will most likely be my most memorable year in education, but also as an introduction for the 2021-2022 school year and welcome to our new 6th graders!

As Mr. Cross and myself are just finishing up our 2nd year at Rolland-Warner in our current positions, we have been able to be a part of a lot of positive improvements and changes during the pandemic. At the same time, we continue to make adjustments and improvements based on the feedback we get from parents and students and hope to have a "normal" school year with the pandemic in the rearview mirror.

This newsletter starts the next school year off right by providing you with important dates and reminders you should be aware of in the next few months, which of course are subject to change based on the pandemic.

Student Handbook Notes - Provide an Up to Date Immunization Record

In order for our 7th grade students to avoid any delay in starting classes please provide an up-to-date immunization record. Please see the attached information on immunizations in this newsletter for specific information about where and when you can update student immunizations. For 7th grade students, immunizations are required for students to be completed before the first day of school. This means that they need to be taken care of this summer. Students are not supposed to be in school without these immunizations completed. To avoid having students held out of class, please review this information and schedule appointments as soon as possible.

Please contact your child's pediatrician or the local health department at (810) 667-0448 to schedule your child's appointment for the required vaccinations now as many have long waits due to the pandemic. See below for a graphic showing which vaccinations are required and you may contact the health department, your pediatrician, or MCIR to obtain a copy of current vaccinations.

Mark Your Calendars!

The new school year is just around the corner, especially for our Year-Round students. Please make a note of all the following important dates on your calendars to get the new school year off to a great start, however, remember these dates and times are subject to change due to the pandemic. A picture packet and a short summer newsletter will be mailed home the first week of August with any changes we may know of.

July 19th - Rolland-Warner Office Opens

July 22nd 12pm to 6pm - Year-Round Schedule Pickup

Any year-round 6th, 7th, or 8th graders should show up at some time in this window to pick up schedules and get their lockers. For 7th grade students, this also might be a good time to hand in any updated immunization forms.

July 26th – First Day of Year-Round School

For the month of August, our year-round students start the school day at a different time than they will when traditional calendar students return. First hour starts at 8:53am until traditional calendar begins (at which point the start time changes to 7:46am). The school opens to students at 7:15am.

TBD – Fall Athletics/Meet the Coach Night in Cafeteria

All students that want to participate in Fall Athletics (Sideline Cheer, Girls’ Basketball, Cross Country, or Football) and parents must attend the Mandatory Athletics Night to turn in the required forms, gain information on sports in general, and meet the coaches.

August 23rd - Fall Sports Begins

August 23rd – 6th and 7th Grade Year-Round Student Picture Day

All 6th and 7th year-round students will have their pictures taken between 10am and 12pm during the school day. 8th graders will be transported to Zemmer on August 23rd for their pictures.

August 23rd 12pm to 7pm – Traditional Schedule Pick-Up for Students in 6th Grade

All traditional students in 6th grade should stop in during the time window. While here, students will receive their schedules, locker information, transportation information, and have their school pictures taken. This allows us to have Student ID’s more efficiently. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately.

August 23rd 1:30pm to 2:30pm AND 6pm to 7pm – 6th Grade Optional Parent Meeting in Cafeteria

These meetings will be the same meeting (so only attend one). Basically, it will cover the student handbook, procedures (student drop-off, office procedures, etc.), and other practical information that you still may be wondering about. If you’ve had RW students here in the past, you probably don’t need to attend. Mr. Stevens will have a short presentation and then answer any remaining questions.

August 24th 12pm to 7pm – Traditional Schedule Pick-Up for Students in 7th Grade

All traditional students in 7th grade should stop in during the time window. While here, students will receive their schedules, locker information, transportation information, and have their school pictures taken. This allows us to have Student ID’s more efficiently. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately.

Our 8th grade year-round will be bussed to Zemmer to have a tour and receive their lockers.

5th Grade Transition

First, let me congratulate our current 5th Graders for showing perseverance and continuing your education with your 5th Grade Teacher as the school year approaches the end! I see some elementary schools providing different opportunities for their 5th grade graduations and wish you a happy celebration during this time! This leads me to reflect on a lesson that I learned with my students at the Character and Leadership Skills camp I used to take them to:

Yesterday is ashes; tomorrow wood.

Only today does your fire burn brightly.

Our memories are great to reflect upon and learn from, we can plan for the future the best we can, however, we need to live in the moment and embrace our circumstances making the best out of them. So please take time and celebrate today this chapter in your life!

Looking forward, I hope this video that we completed last year during the shutdown and students couldn't come to RW helps to put minds at ease. Some staff has changed, but I think between the students actually getting to have 5th-grade visits, the videos posted on the website for Opportunity Night, and now last year's video students have an opportunity to see some inside workings of RW!

We continue to see numbers decrease and hope to give an accurate assessment of school protocols in the August Newsletter.

I continue to preach that living in the moment, positivity, and getting outside are extremely important for our students' well-being, so keep that in mind as we go through the summer!

Finally, we are in this together and can support each other! #OtherPeopleMatter #lightningleaders

School Supplies for Next Year

We have compiled a list of suggested supplies for 2021-2022. Of course, students will always be supplied with the basics at Rolland-Warner but the following items will be used regularly in all classes. Many of these can be found at the summer back-to-school sales for very cheap prices.

Along with the below school supplies, our teachers always appreciate classroom supplies like tissues, cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer, and Expo markers! Give a teacher a pack of Expo markers and they are like a kid with candy!!!

RW Counselors

Counselors are super busy right now scheduling for next year, M-Step testing, 5th-grade tours, and end of the year preparation. Should you have any questions about the above reach out to the counselors and they can assist!

Reach out for academic or social needs to our counselors! They can steer you in the correct direction!

Our counselors are Mrs. Price, who works with students with last names A-K, and Mrs. Crespo who will be working with students with the last name L-Z. They can be reached at:

Mrs. Price 810-538-2339 or

Mrs. Crespo 810-538-2338 or

Next year, we will continue to have a therapist from the Lapeer County Intermediate School District, who can meet with students throughout the week for social needs, however, the ISD does require a permission slip. Please have this slip filled out and return the first week of school so we can be up and running!

Rolland-Warner PAC Meetings

We have completed all our PAC meetings for the year. I appreciate the parents who volunteered their time to visit with me monthly and discuss various aspects of the school. I use these PAC meetings not just to share information and explain programs at Rolland-Warner, but also to get feedback from parents on areas that may be lacking. These meetings really help me keep my finger on the pulse of our families (which really are our customers). For those parents who have a student at RW next year, I look forward to seeing you in September for another round of PAC meetings (with Zoom options to increase one's ability to attend), and for those moving on to Zemmer I encourage you to join Dr. Stanton for PAC meetings there!

Here is a list of the RW PAC meetings for the 21/22 school year that will occur close to the first Friday of the month at 9:30 am-10:30 am via Zoom, so you can put on your calendar: Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 5, Dec. 10, Jan. 7, Feb. 11, Mar. 10, Apr. 8, and May 5.
