Sanford Library Report
Kathleen Ward, Library Media Specialist
Fourth Grade has been exploring the Underground Railroad
Using a KWL chart, we explored what we knew about the Underground Railroad, filling in the K section. Then, I read a historical fiction book called The Patchwork Path: A Quilt Map to Freedom by Bettye Stroud. Students colored paper quilt squares that were like the actual coded quilts that helped the runaway slaves escape. These quilt squares will soon be on display in the hallway.
In the next lesson, students listened to a biography of Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman: Hero of the Underground Railroad by Lori Mortensen and The Underground Railroad: An Interactive History Adventure by Allison Lassieur that showed the difficult choices of slavery. The students filled in the L section and then asked a question in the W section.
Our plan is to research their questions in our next lessons using books and encyclopedias.
