What is new?

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I spent the weekend with my girls and family time. Looking forward to this next week with lots of learning going on. This week we start our Curriculum Based Measurement Assessments. Those results will be coming home when all of the class is completed. We will be assessing letter names and sounds as well as Math. These are based on a 1 minute time frame. Monday you will be receiving the Reading logs I told you about at Group Conferences. Mrs. Wheeler has a detailed letter coming home today but any questions feel free to ask.

I wanted to talk to you briefly about our behavior system in place in the classroom. They have an opportunity to move up on the system 2 times or move down 3 times. Everyone starts on Ready to Learn, if your child stays in the green zone they will earn their happy face in their folder. If they move up even better and the top they get a special something from me. To go down means "safe seat, buddy room or office". This is when I will write a brief note in their folder. If behaviors get out of hand we will discuss what is going on. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.

In a few weeks we will have a author coming to talk to Kindergarten. Her name is Ann Ingalls. You can check out her website at http://anningallswrites.com. We are really excited for her to come. A note will be coming home today with more information. Here is a quick bio about her.

Ann Ingalls has been writing for all of her adult life, both as an early childhood and special education teacher and as a freelance writer. She is the author of 26 books in print or forthcoming. What we learned!

Readers Workshop-This past week we learned a lot on reading. They now have book boxes and special reading spots which they read at everyday. I introduced 3 ways to read: read the pictures, words or retell. A lot are still reading the pictures but I am proud of them for trying words they know and words they don't know. I keep emphasizing that the more sight words we learn the easier reading will be and it truly will. Plus I love how their self confidence builds once they begin to recognize the words they are learning in their own books.

Writers Workshop-Your child is working so hard in Writers Workshop. I love how they are trying to write letters down for the sounds they hear and some are even using their new sight words. We talked about what Writers Workshop looks like, introduced their writing folders and most importantly talked about what to do when we think we are done with our writing. :)

Math Workshop-In Math we looked at our Birthdays and talked bout who was 5 and already 6. We did some counting stations as well as practicing counting to 100. In math
