The History about Thanksgiving by Jessica Hughes
In 1621 the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag
Indians shared an autumn harvest feast. This day is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual states. It was not until 1863, in the middle of the Civil War that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a National Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Thanksgiving is usually celebrated on the last Thursday of November.
The History of Veterans Day by Ethan
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War 1, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War 1 veterans.
In 1954, after having been though both World War 2 and the Korean organizations- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
In 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971.
Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on November 11.

History of Volleyball by Maggie
Volleyball is a very popular sport in the United States. This game was originally called mintonette. The game was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a graduate of Springfield College of the YMCA, designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Many players from all around now know and love the game of Volleyball. Our Volleyball team, here at SMS, plays at the beginning of the school year. Our girls work hard and you can tell their heart and soul is in the game. Go Hornets!

Saint Parade by Aidan
St. Mary Catholic School students honored different saints on All Saints day with a parade. In the Catholic faith there are many everyday people like you and me that had lived their lives for Christ. Saints are considered “heroes” of the Catholic faith. One of the most common Saints today is St. Teresa of Calcutta. She is more commonly known as “Mother Teresa”.
Students in the Religion classes at St. Mary are each assigned a Saint for the Saint's Parade. They do research and learn about their saint. The younger students make a poster cutout to depict their saint. Older students actually dress in costume. The students then all line up and give a brief description of their saint to the entire student body, staff, parents and friends up in the gym . This is enjoyed by all that attend.
