Happy New Year

Camp Twitch & Shout Summer Countdown!

Applications will be up on our website by the end of the 1st week of January 2017! We are looking forward to having you as a part of our "Under The Sea" Camp Twitch & Shout Summer 2017! We have pulled together an exciting team of Volunteers, a supportive and engaging Parenting Workshop, and plans for an unforgettable program for our Campers. We've been planning for months already, and I am so proud of our Leadership team and all of the exciting things they are helping bring to our program this summer. We have also planned a supportive and engaging free full day workshop sponsored by the CDC & the TAA for our parents during the camp week with Dr. Kenneth Phelps in Athens. With our goals for our campers, and the support for our parents, we hope to help bring their camp experiences and accomplishments home with them and positively impact their lives all year long. For more information about applying to Camp Twitch & Shout, read "Information about Summer Camp 2017" below and join us this summer!

Cody & Katie will put a smile on your face...

This summer we have added a few new positions and I'm excited to have Cody Weavil as our Assistant Unit Director, and Katie Adams as our Unit Liaison. I have witnessed the spirit, positivity, and joy that both Katie and Cody bring to camp. They have both been a solid support and I appreciate all that they have done to help support our campers and volunteers!

Katie has been with Camp Twitch and Shout for 5 years, and has loved every minute of it. She has volunteered as a Counselor, Cabin Leader, Unit Leader, Master of the Golf Cart, and now, Unit Liaison. “I love the Camp environment. The unconditional love that happens at Camp is unlike I have ever seen. I don’t remember where I first learned about Camp, but found myself applying to be a counselor 5 years ago and have come back every year.” Katie and Cody have worked closely together since she started at Camp is and she is excited to keep that going. “If it’s not broken, why fix it?” They have created a close friendship throughout the years and the duo may be best known at Camp for their impeccable kazoo and ukulele musical talent (talent being highly open to interpretation ;). While not working with Camp, Katie is a Supervisor of Internal Communication for a University’s Financial Aid office, and is finishing up her Master’s Degree in Counseling. She is excited to bring these two worlds together this year at Camp. Cody is an Elementary Music School teacher, and his compassion for others is best explained by his favorite motto...

"Have courage and be kind".

"Practical Parenting for the Child or Teen with Tourette" Workshop 2017

Camp Twitch and Shout hosted its first workshop for parents and caregivers in 2016 focused on sensory sensitivities, anxiety disorders, and educational accommodations for children living with Tourette. Due to the positive feedback and our wish to serve both children and their parents, we will be hosting our second workshop in 2017! This workshop is made possible by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and the National Tourette Association of America (TAA). Dr. Kenneth Phelps will be our featured speaker for the day. Dr. Phelps is a child and family therapist who has served as a national speaker for the Tourette Association of America. He currently works within the Tourette Center of Excellence - Southeastern Consortium at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where he offers comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), parent management training (PMT), and family therapy. The topic for our 2017 workshop will be "Practical Parenting for the Child or Teen with Tourette." This interactive and didactic presentation will cover a variety of parenting techniques, including descriptive praise, token economies, reflective listening, think throughs, giving effective commands, among others. Specifics of how to respond to youth experiencing rage, anxiety, or compulsive behavior will be covered. There will be ample opportunity for problem solving of common parental pitfalls and learning from peer parents in the group. The hope of our workshop is to not reduce parenting to a simple recipe (as it is certainly the most difficult job on the planet!), but rather offer an array of ingredients that parents and caregivers can individualize to their child. We hope you'll join us for this day long seminar!

You should see this kid Juggle!

I am Theo LeBlanc from South Portland Maine. I was first diagnosed with Tourette when I was four. I love to juggle and perform in the circus! I started juggling three years ago and taking classes at Circus Maine 2 1/2 years ago. I am now part of a circus performance troupe performing around New England. Generally, I like to juggle, do partner Acro, and also some clowning. When I grow up I want to join the circus… no really! My dream is to juggle in a Cirque du Soleil show.

I started going to camp twitch and shout four years ago. I love the campers, counselors and all of the activities we do. Especially, rockwall climbing, boating and the wacky Olympics!

Camp Twitch and Shout is an award winning American Camp Association (ACA) Accredited Camp. In 2016, we received the Regional Edie Klein Program of Excellence Award, and recently the National Eleanor P. Eells Program of Excellence Award! Both awards are a reflection of the dedication and compassion of our incredible group of volunteer professionals and Counselors.

This summer we will be accepting applications from children ages 8 to 17 with a confirmed diagnosis of Tourette syndrome. Our 17-year old campers will be in our Leaders In Training program (also known as the LIT program). There will be an interview process to help them practice for some day applying as a counselor - information will be sent to you sometime in March. The Camper registration process is on a first come-first serve basis by age groups…once an age group is filled, we will start a wait list and notify you if a spot becomes available.

Camp Twitch and Shout is a program of the "Tourette Center & Support, Inc.", a 501c3 nonprofit here in Georgia. Through fundraising efforts and the generosity of donors, we hope to provide help to as many families as possible through Financial Assistance, as well as a sliding scale of subsidized tuition options for those families who are unable to afford the full cost of camp. Camp tuition covers programming and all of the child’s expenses once they get to camp.

There is a $50 fee required by all campers, including those requesting Financial Assistance. The Financial Assistance application is to be filled out only by those families in need who cannot afford the $500 minimum subsidized tuition. The application is located in your online account after completing registration. A detailed explanation is located as a link on the Camper's page of the website under "Tuition Tiers". Follow the instructions in the confirmation email. The deadline to apply for full or partial financial assistance is March 1st.

There is also a sliding scale of tuition options for all other applicants. The tuition options range from $500 up to the full tuition of $900. Please choose the tuition option that you are most able to afford – this will allow us to provide more assistance to those families in need.

Other optional costs include:

1. Shuttle fees for transportation to and from Atlanta Hartsfield Airport - $25 each way (you can choose one way or round trip).

2. Linen rental fee of $25 (this option is ONLY for those campers flying in to camp)

3. Yearbook $30 (available by the beginning of December 2017)

4. Individual camp pictures $10 – 1 5x7 and 4 wallets with the camp logo

5. There are several Camp Store items also available at check in and check out – more information in the Spring.

Applications will be up on our website the first week of January 2017!
