A Message From the Principal...

Hello Artondale Otters,

I am so happy to be back this year and working with you and your child. I value our partnership as we work together to create the best learning community for all Otters. Thank you for your grace and understanding as we work together this first week of remote learning. The teachers have commented how supportive you have been as we work through all of the various situations with remote learning.

Please contact the main office if you need anything and they will assist you with the correct support that you need.

I look forward to working together this year as an Artondale Community! Thank you for your on-going support and being a member of our learning community.

Every Otter matters, and every moment counts!

In Partnership,

Counselor Corner

My name is Mimi Mathews and I am so lucky to say that I am the school counselor at Artondale. I am here to help ALL students be successful socially, emotionally and academically. I visit all classrooms where I teach social-emotional education skills. I also meet in small groups or individually with students who might need a little extra support. I love to consult with staff and parents to provide resources or educational support to help students become the best they can be, but my favorite part of my job is spending time with your kids!

Please feel free to stop by my office or contact me at any time!

LUNCHES!

We will continue Free breakfast and lunches to all children under 18. Children do not have to be present to receive a lunch. We may ask them fill out a form (no last name required) saying that they understand they are picking them up for their child/children. If there is a family that needs to pick up for a neighbor or friend that you know needs lunches please do so and let us know. We are here to help the community!

Artondale Open House

Please enjoy our virtual open house. There are links embedded in the open house to our amazing Artondale staff. We are excited to have our Otters back this school year!

LAP Reading Information

Reading Fluency Practice & Assessment

Hi Families,

This fall we will be administering our DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency Assessment. Below are some details about what to expect and how you can prepare your child for this assessment.

Who: All students in 2nd-5th grade

What: Students will read a grade level passage for one minute. The students will see the text on the screen and will be scored by their classroom teacher, myself, or a paraeducator. If a student gets stuck on a word, the administering adult will help him/her after three seconds so he/she can keep reading.

When: Our testing window begins the middle of September. The classroom teacher and/or I will schedule times to complete these assessments using Zoom video conferencing.

Why: When assessing the students we will be scoring two areas: rate (how many words per minute) and accuracy (how many words the student got correct in one minute). Research shows that students who read at a fluent and accurate rate have stronger comprehension of what they have read. Student’s reading comprehension will be assessed using other tools by the classroom teacher.

What Now? To help your child prepare for this assessment, use the passages located on the back of this letter. Have him/her practice reading for one minute at a time and count how many words they read per minute as well as the number of errors.

Please feel free to call or email if you have any questions about how you can best support your child as they prepare for this assessment. Thank you for your help!
