arrival & dismissal procedures - IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT EVERYONE ADHERE TO THESE PROCEDURES TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS
CAR TRANSPORTATION
Dunning was originally built as a neighborhood school. It was not built to accommodate the 20 school buses that enter the driveway each morning and afternoon.
For safety, do not enter the driveway from 8:30 am - 9:30 am or 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm, unless you are parking in the new lot. You may not exit the lot until all buses have left the driveway.
THERE SHOULD BE NO CURBSIDE DROP-OFF OR PICK-UP IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL FROM 8:30 am - 9:30 am OR 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm.
MORNING DROP OFF
Park either on Frost Street on the sidewalk closest to the school or in the new lot. Then you may walk your child to the school.
Parking in the lot:
If parking in the lot, please park in a designated space.
Students in grades K-2 who are walked onto school grounds by their parents should be brought to the East Wing Playground in order to line up with their classes.
Grades 3-5 students should go to their designated line-up areas on the West Wing Playground. Please have students take “the long way around” the building, starting on the East wing and going around the back of the building. This way they won’t have to walk through a live parking lot.
Cars may not exit the lot until all buses have left the driveway.
Parking on Frost Street:
Park and disembark only on the sidewalk closest to the school building.
Students in grades K-2 who are walked onto school grounds by their parents should be brought to the East Wing Playground in order to line up with their classes.
Grades 3-5 students should also go to their designated line-up areas on the West Wing Playground. Please have students take “the long way around” the building, starting on the East wing and going around the back of the building. This way they won’t have to walk through a live parking lot.
AFTERNOON PICK-UP
Park either on Frost Street on the sidewalk closest to the school or in the new lot.
All students should be picked up on the East Wing Playground or on Frost Street near the entrance of the school. Parents who are running late should call the office and the students will be directed to wait in the main office to be picked up.
Cars may not exit the lot until all buses have left the driveway.
Cornell Road Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Please keep in mind the following guidelines if using Cornell Road, behind Dunning, for dropping off or picking up your child.
LIVE PARKING ONLY.
Please DO NOT park in the center of the cul-de-sac on Cornell Road. Cars that are parked in the middle of the cul-de-sac do not allow residents of Cornell to enter and exit their driveways safely.
You must park on the odd side of the street against the sidewalk curbing at all times. Please adhere to the NO PARKING posted signs on the even numbered side of the street; before, during, and after school hours.
If you are choosing a “live drop-off” for your student in the morning, please do not pull straight into the cul-de-sac and then back up to exit the area. This is VERY dangerous. Please proceed in a circular motion around the outside of the cul-de-sac to enter and exit.
Please DO NOT block any driveways when parking on Cornell or make turns in the center of the road to reverse direction. Use the cul-de-sac to turn around.
Please do not double-park.
All classes enter the building when the 9:00 am bell rings. Students are expected to be in their seats to start their day when the 9:05 am bell rings. Staff will not return to the doors to unlock them for individual students.
If you arrive on Cornell Road between 9:00 am and 9:05 am and do not see classes on the playground, students should not be permitted to walk on their own to the back doors in case they are locked. Parents should accompany students if there are no adults present.
Any students who arrive after 9:05 am are tardy and should be signed in at the main office with a parent present.
Book Choice Matters
Brett Berkman, Literacy Coach
Favorite Books or Series of 6-8 year old children
http://www.scholastic.com/readingreport/what-kids-want.htm
If you want to raise a reader, let your child choose his or her books! A study by scholastic (http://www.scholastic.com/readingreport/what-parents-and-kids-want.htm) found 89% of children aged 6-17 agree with the following statement:
“My favorite books are the ones I have picked out myself.”
So, go to the library or the the bookstore with your child and let them pick a book or two. Don’t worry if they are in 8th grade and still reading the BIG NATE series or they are reading Smile by Raina Telgemeier for the millionth time. The important thing is they are reading and loving it! And if you find a great book that you think other Dunning students would love, make sure to share it! You can email me the titles at bberkman@framingham.k12.ma.us.
Flu Advisory - January 2019
Rates of flu-like illness rose in Massachusetts in the past seven days, according to the latest weekly Massachusetts Department of Public Health flu report.
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughs and sneezes of infected people. Less often, a person also might get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes, or nose. People of all ages get sick with flu. School-aged children are a group with a high rate of flu illness.
Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people, especially children, may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may also be infected with flu and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.
The good news is that it is not too late to protect yourself and your family from the flu by getting a flu shot. There is still plenty of flu vaccine available in communities across Massachusetts. Call your health care provider to schedule a visit for a flu shot, visit a local pharmacy, or search for flu vaccination locations at https://vaccinefinder.org/.
Here are several recommendations to protect your children and family members from the flu:
- Take time to get a flu vaccine.
- Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, health experts recommend that you and/or your sick children stay home from school or work for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like flu.
If you have questions about the flu, check with our school nurse, Tara Haire, or healthcare provider. Stay well!

CARE & SHARE
The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.
Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
