In The Classroom...
Today, Mrs. Tuttle came to visit again to teach the kids how to use Google Draw. Ask your child about it. With this and celebrating Read Across America Day, we did not get to take our spelling test. We will do this on Monday. The kids can use Spelling City online for more practice with these words and to take a look at their new words for next week.
The kids are busy adding to their Learning Portfolios. This is their own Google Site that allows them to reflect on the learning in our room. They will share these with you during Student-Led Conferences. These will happen at the end of the quarter. You'll get a sign-up sheet at a later date.
We have been busy balancing equations that include addition and subtraction. Next week we will review missing addends and then the kids will participate in an Escape the Classroom through solving math problems that focus on equal or not equal. It's going to be exciting!!!
Did you know your child is a geologist (I bet you did with all the rocks they've been bringing home- Sorry!!!) The kids have been super excited to take a closer look at these earth materials. I shared with them my rock collection from the NC mountains. The kids learned more about the properties of rocks and worked to identify some with my rocks. They even used a chart to try and name the rocks. We ran out of time this week to look at the volcanic rocks, but that is on our list to do first thing next week.
We started our mapping unit this week in Social Studies. This week we learned that looking at a map is like being a bird; maps give us a birds eye view of the places we are looking at. We also learned what a route is. Ask your child to see if he/she can tell you. We had a lot of fun with this in class and the kids made some great maps that showed the route from our classroom to the playground.
Whew!!!! I told you it was a busy week =)
I hope you all have a great weekend and as always don't forget to look at the "Notes" section for important information.
Take Care,
Ms. Gower

- RED Envelope- Be sure to look inside these for their homework assignment. There is a reading passage for them to complete and turn in on Thursday. We had a few students who didn't complete these this week. This is probably their most important homework assignment so please make sure your child completes it unless he/she has a homework pass.
- 120 Day- Our next special day is 120 Day. I hope your child is busy thinking about his/her project. These are due on Mar. 11th. We will be sharing them throughout the week and then having a special celebration on Mar. 15th with the other first grade classes. Don't forget to dress your child up as an old man or woman for this day... you know people are living longer these days. ;-)
- Sign up Genius- Please take a look at the sign up genius for our 120 day snack and sign up to send an item in. We will need all items sent in on/by Wednesday, Mar. 13. Here's the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0A4BA8AD2AA02-120day2
- Spring Pictures- Spring picture information is inside your child's Friday Folder.
- Class Website- I have to apologize for not having this updated this week. Things have been not only busy at school, but home as well. I do plan on updating it this weekend with a new Read & Respond Blog as well as Math Stumper. Check for it on Sunday.
