An Unwanted Visitor
So, we must rid the visitor. Weed, Marijuana, Pot...whatever name you want to give it is the dominant drug of choice in our building. The selling and distribution is primarily in the upper grade bathrooms and a lot of the arrangements are made at the Harrisburg Park (near the Harrisburg Library). I imagine it is easy for students to tell their parents they are going to the library and detour to the park. Also, it is a convenient hangout for those kids that don't have a steady supervision going on in the home...you know who those kids are through those relationships you are building. While the head of the operation is currently out of our building...we have minions who are doing the deals inside!
What can you do? Put a halt on the number of kids leaving class to go to the restroom. Watch the time limit they are gone. I watched a video Friday where the student was clearly out for 10 or more minutes based on the number of times he lapped the hall waiting for someone to meet him. Watch the texting during BYOT. Be visible, be visible, be visible during that class changes. Refrain from congregating during class changes as students were detailed in perceiving who would catch them and who would not...perceiving being a key term there!
None of this is a criticism of your practices...they have done it right under our noses (admin. included) for some time. We just want it out. Nobody wants kids on drugs. Nobody wants them to head down this path. I have often been told that the drug of choice at the high school is Heroine. Well...Marijuana is a pathway to it. In my 19 years of doing this profession, the hard drugs are with more affluent students and pills are more prevalent in less affluent. Take it for what it is...but, we have to rid the Ridge of any drugs in our building.
