A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for everyone's help in reopening Trussville City Schools for the 2020-21 school year. I hope your children had a successful start. We had many adjustments that we worked out this week and we look forward to moving ahead with our established routines.
On behalf of the teachers and administration, we ask that families keep their child in the option they have now chosen. This is important because 1) class rolls are now set for each option; 2) students are matched with their assigned teachers in Schoology; 3) classroom schedules and spaces are arranged for physical distancing and; 4) safety protocols are established for all areas. We are ready to continue this plan "as is", or until health orders change.
If there is a hardship in continuing your chosen option, please contact your school principal and that request will be handled on a case by case basis on or before the end of the 9 week grading period or trimester.
Thank you for your patience and understanding with this request. We look forward to a smooth 2nd week of school and congratulations to everyone for meeting and exceeding expectations for a successful reopening of Trussville City Schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Pattie Neill
Superintendent

Trussville City Schools Newest Additions
TCS is pleased to announce our new assistants who work for the office and clinic. These office assistants are also medically trained assistants qualified to provide assistance in our clinics. Our new assistants have worked for TCS previously in other positions.
Dr. Neill stated, “When the TCS after school care program closed, our after school care workers asked to stay with TCS instead of transferring their employment to the YMCA. TCS was delighted to interview and fill these new positions with these talented ladies thereby allowing them to stay with TCS!"
Beth Martin is the new assistant for the office and clinic at Hewitt-Trussville High School. Ms. Martin was the previous Paine Elementary After School Care and Summer Child Care Manager. When the Child Care Program closed, Ms. Martin voluntarily agreed to transfer into the new position.
Ms. Martin stated, “The Staff at HTHS are amazing, they have all made me feel so welcome! I have learned so much from Dana Depew, she is kind, patient and so full of knowledge. The students are respectful and I am enjoying getting to see so many of my after-school care students from years back! I love my new position!
Belinda Prosser is the assistant for the office and clinic at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School. Belinda was the previous Magnolia Elementary After School Care and Summer Child Care Manager. When the Child Care Program closed, Ms. Prosser voluntarily agreed to transfer into the new position.
Ms. Prosser stated, “Transferring to the HTMS family has been amazing! Everyone has been so welcoming, and getting to know Nurse Laurie Morrison has been incredible! She has been so patient, understanding encouraging and kind. She has such a passion for the wellness of the students, and I am thankful that I get to be part of that with her. I am looking forward to the adventure of getting to know the amazing HTMS students, and I am beyond excited and grateful to be working with the HTMS administration, faculty/staff, and students.”
Janet Curlee is the new assistant for the office and clinic for Paine Elementary School. Ms. Curlee was previously the PE Instructional Assistant at Paine Elementary School.
Ms. Curlee stated, “ I have been in with TCS for several years and what I have found is that all students want to feel loved and accepted. I strive, every day, to smile and talk with every student that I see in the clinic, in the hallway or anywhere in the building. So, what I love about working in the Paine clinic is spreading joy, laughter and seeing smiles from our students!"
We appreciate all you do for the students of Trussville City Schools!

What Does the Mask Mandate Require and Allow?
When do I have to wear a mask?
You have to wear a mask when you are in public and in close contact with other people. Specifically, the order says to wear a mask when you are within six feet of a person from another household in any of the following places: (a) an indoor space open to the public; (b) a vehicle operated by a transportation service; and (c) an outdoor public space where ten or more people are gathered.
Are there any exceptions to the mask-wearing requirement?
There are five categories of exceptions. The largest category, exceptions for “practical necessity,” covers people or situations where mask use is incompatible with the realities of life—for example, children six or younger, people with certain medical conditions or disabilities, eating and drinking, medical and dental procedures, and so on. There are also categories of exceptions for exercise, for communicating with an audience, and for certain essential job functions. An additional category carves out narrow exceptions for protected activities like voting and religious worship—but even then, wearing a mask is strongly encouraged.
What kind of face mask is required?
The requirement allows all kinds of masks to be used—whether store-bought, homemade, or improvised from household items like scarves, bandanas, or t-shirts. The key is for the mask to cover your nostrils and mouth. For instructions on how to make your own mask, see the CDC’s “How to Make Cloth Face Coverings,” available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-to-make-cloth-face- covering.html. The use of a face shield complies with the new mask requirement so long as it fully covers the nostrils and mouth. The shield must extend just past the chin in order to fully cover the mouth.
Does this requirement apply to schools?
The new mask or facial covering requirement applies in the school setting. The requirement, however, is limited to people interacting with others within six feet of “an indoor space open to the general public, a vehicle operated by a transportation service, or an outdoor public space where 10 or more people are gathered.” Although some areas of school property may be open to the public, others may not. Additionally, the mask and/or facial-covering requirement contains various exceptions, including ones for people who are six years of age or younger and for people with a medical condition or disability that prevents him or her from wearing a facial covering.

TRUSSVILLE COUNTS 2020 CENSUS
The 2020 Census is very important to the future of the City of Trussville and the State of Alabama.
Did you know?
The Census directly impacts funding for Trussville for the next decade.
Gasoline tax funds, including the new 10-cent gasoline tax are based upon our Census count for the following ten years.
Internet sales tax is distributed on a population basis from the Census count.
Capital Improvement funds and other funds from the State are allocated by Census population.
Businesses use census data to determine where to build offices, stores, and industrial facilities that create jobs and tax dollars in our community.
Census statistics are the basis for many federal dollars and grant funding, including programs such as Medicaid, WIC, National School Lunch programs, and Head Start.
Each person counted generates almost $1,600 in federal funding for our State and communities.
Alabama may lose up to two seats in Congress with less than an 80% response statewide. We may lose one seat with less than 90% response. This dilutes our voice in Washington, D.C. How can you respond to the 2020 Census?
Online
Telephone
Mail
Watch for an invitation letter mid-March 2020 that has your unique ID to respond
Your data is confidential and is not shared with IRS, law enforcement, courts, or immigration. Your answers are for statistical purposes only.
It is your civic duty to say, “I count” by completing your Census questionnaire.
