Principals' Post
I recently came across an excellent resource that very clearly outlined what bullying IS and what it IS NOT. The word “bullying” has become a common part of our language and is frequently misused to describe unacceptable behaviors. It is important to recognize that not all situations involve bullying.
Bullying is defined as: “Repeated attacks or intimidation (physical, verbal, or psychological) by one individual who is perceived as being physically or psychologically stronger than another.”
Explained another way, bullying has four elements:
1. Pain – Someone is physically, psychologically or sexually hurting another person with actions that are intentional.
2. Power – The person who is bullying another is perceived as more powerful and is usually attempting to wield some power over the victim.
3. Persistence – Typically, bullying is persistent which means it happens more than once; it is a repeated act.
4. Permission – Usually (not always), someone else knows about the bullying and is allowing it to happen by NOT taking action. Often these onlookers are called “silent witnesses.”
What bullying is NOT:
· Arguments or conflicts
· Choosing one friend over another
· Being bossy to other kids
· Telling a joke about someone
· Fighting
· Telling another person you don’t like him/her
· Acts of harassment, aggression or unkindness that happens once
Parents and school personnel are the most powerful defense against bullying. On-going conversations with trusted adults about how to interact with peers, how to respond to potential negative interactions and how to report situations where they might need help are crucial.
Our goal is to provide a safe and caring learning environment for our students. As always, if you need to report a situation or need support please feel free to contact your child’s teacher(s), our school Social Workers (Mrs. Rotsch or Mrs. Blackstone) or either one of us.

Students are to bring their costumes to school and will have time prior to the parade to change into their costumes. Please adhere to the following costume guidelines:

No costumes or makeup are to be worn to school.
Hair MUST be styled before coming to school.
No suggestive or violent costumes are allowed.
Costumes should be appropriate for the weather, as we will parade outdoors (weather permitting).
No weapon type items are allowed.
Regular, sturdy shoes should be worn - students still participate in PE and will walk in a parade.

1:00 p.m. Room party parents may enter the building through THE FRONT GYM DOOR - DOOR #14 . Only approved parents will be allowed to enter the building to help with room parties. IDs and District Volunteer forms for room parent volunteers must be on file in the office by October 17th.
1:15 p.m. The parade will begin with second graders leading from the front of the school. Students will continue the parade around the playground. Parents are invited to line the parade route - the BEST viewing location is on the playground - please stay to the OUTSIDE of the cones, as the children will parade around the inside of the marked area! PARENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PARK IN THE GLEN OAKS SCHOOL PARKING LOT. PLEASE FIND PARKING IN THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD.
1:30 p.m. Room parties will begin after the parade.
2:30 p.m. Parties end. Those same parents who are helping with the parties and wish to take their children home early, need to sign them out in the office when they leave.
All food and party goods are handled by the PTA room parents. Students are not allowed to bring in any food for the party. Contact your room parent for further information. We look forward to celebrating with everyone this Halloween!
