Let's talk about PBIS.
Though I said, we will be meeting on October 2nd to discuss the new art curriculum, I have to change that. We will now be meeting on the 3rd at 3:00. During this meeting, we are also going to discuss PBIS.
Until then... I would like to make good use of our time to clarify and make some adjustments to the PBIS plan. Here are some basics to our new behavior plan:
1. I made a new citation form. HERE IT IS. (It can be accessed on the Teacher Resource Page.)
Using and keeping up with the behavior logs/discipline referral forms on Teacher Ease is complicated for jr. high and time consuming for everyone. There has been a lot of confusion and I feel this will remedy some of that. The behaviors will still be shared with parents. There will be a record of them in the student's file. They will still be reported on TeacherEase.
Here is how it will work: When you do a behavior citation, Mrs. Martin will see it populated on her spreadsheet just like last year's detention form. She will then enter it on the student's behavior log or discipline report according to your instruction on the citation form. She will make sure the email is sent to parents. She will notify the student when they have a detention once they have gotten 3 negative citations. She will announce it before lunch like always. She will calculate those students who are eligible for the rewards and give teachers the report just as she did last year. She will give me a list of positive citations so I can announce them on the morning announcements.
2. It is important that everyone understands the basics of how the PBIS system works. One of the main components to a successful behavior system is that everyone is consistent - especially among those grades or classrooms that switch. It is difficult for a student to have varied expectations of behavior from one classroom to the next. I am certainly not saying that everyone's classroom behavior plan must be the same, but for a school-wide behavior system to work, there needs to be consistency. As far as junior high is concerned, some basic things need to be the same. For example, if a student is tardy for class, forgets their materials, is specified by name in a substitute's notes, has a phone, etc. everyone needs to treat these infractions the same. I plan to alter a couple of the junior high bells to accommodate for a bathroom break by taking a minute off of the before and after classes. I know this has been a concern by some jr high teachers.
3. If a student has a high number of marks, or you notice repetitive negative behaviors, you should set a meeting with Mrs. Bailey, contact the parent on the phone, and create a behavior intervention plan for that student. In some of these situations, the student may also need to be referred for counseling during RTI.
4. A student gets assigned a detention when he/she has gotten 3 citations in 1 week.
5. I would like to use this page to discuss questions and concerns between now and the meeting on October 2nd. Please voice your concerns or questions here. Remember, we are a team and it takes teamwork to make a new school-wide program work. I think we are all in agreement that we would like to see behavior improve. I am not always sure what the answers are to solving some of these behavior issues, but I am sure that negativity is not going to be a part of the answer. Let's all keep a positive outlook, work together to put something in action that is great for our students and school, and remember the big picture and what we would all like for this plan to accomplish. I am confident that once everyone is on the same page, we will see some significant positive results.
