April Elk Trax
2022-2023 National School to Watch
From The Principal:
April is here! Hopefully April showers will bring May flowers for us to enjoy!
We start this month with a shortened week with a teacher's workday on Monday to close out the end of the third grading period. The last grading period begins today and will run through the end of the year- can you believe that?? It does not seem possible to think the end of the school year is approaching. Our students are out of school on Friday, April 7 and Monday, April 10 for a holiday break to celebrate with their families. As we move through April, school events and afternoon activities start to get busy with track meets, musical practices, club events, and more! Please stay informed through our daily announcements and emails to parents. Lastly, we will have our annual Elk-a-thon this year at Rockingham Park. This school fundraiser is a great way to participate in wellness and being active while supporting our school.
Elks- I hope you have the opportunity to come in and see our graphics on the main hallway! We will be continuing to add to this throughout the spring, making our school look inviting and showing our Elk spirit.
Have a great month and as always, feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns.

A Message From Michelle Campbell, Assistant Principal
It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the school year! Testing season will soon be upon us so please help make sure your students are well prepared for test days with a good night's sleep and well-rounded breakfast. Teachers will also be working hard this month to help students prepare and work on test taking strategies and remediation. We have two home track meets during the month of April. Come show your support for our hard working athletes. Our musical this year - High School Musical, Jr. will air the first weekend of May. Our kids have worked very hard in preparation for the show. So come out and watch to show your support. We also have a lot of fun end of the year events planned. So pay close attention to the calendar. I look forward to seeing you all at the many events we have planned!

A Note From Krystal Muterspaugh, Assistant Principal
March has flown by! This upcoming month is busy with lots of activities, be sure to read about everything in our newsletter. I wanted to highlight one event coming up, our school fundraiser. Our school is once again having the Elk-a-thon where students can raise money for our school. With the money they raise students can earn the opportunity to walk or earn a field trip to Valley Jump and Your Pie. Please be on the lookout for that information. I hope everyone has a great April, if I can be of any help please let me know.
Ms. Muterspaugh will work with students whose Last Name begins with M-Z
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
We are currently having an increase of students sending and sharing inappropriate content via cell phones and social media. Parents, please be aware of what your child has on their phone and know what is happening with social media. Please see the information below from our SRO regarding inappropriate content on phones:
Any person who possesses pictures of child pornography could be charged with a felony. It is illegal to have nudity on a phone that is of a minor. School consequences are in addition to the legal concerns. Students who falsely identify and/or share pictures that they claim are minors will also be addressed by school administration. Reports of child pornopgrpahy on a phone are subject to lawful seizure and can be seized by the SRO.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our SRO, Bruce Hornick or our school administration.
April Clinic News
APRIL NEWS
April, here we are!! Spring time seems to be here and so do some of the seasonal allergies that come along with some of the pretty weather and the many beautiful things that bloom this time of year. I know I sound like a broken record, but we request that you please continue to monitor your child before sending them to school. Your children continue to come to the clinic with some post nasal drip due to the seasonal changes. Check temperatures and monitor symptoms if they are not feeling well. Also make sure you have filled the new "permission to give medication form" that was sent out this year as well as bring in any over the counter medication you are wanting your student to take here at school. We are not allowed to carry any "stock" medication here in the clinic. You are to provide new unopened bottles for your student to the nurse. As we all work together we can keep things at bay so students can be healthy while trying to be at school learning to the best of their abilities. As always I am here to help your child in any way that I can to be here so they can learn and get through these last few weeks. Let's finish out strong together!!
PHYSICALS & VACCINATIONS
Again...I am going to continue to put this reminder in each newsletter so we don't forget. I know things get busy with the warm weather, sports, vacations etc. So I just don't want this information to slip your mind. As yet another early reminder for sports physicals, physicals in general and immunizations (if you so choose to vaccinate your student) please don't wait until the last minute to schedule those appointments as those time slots go fast at doctors offices. Go ahead and put a call in and get on the books now. Set those appointments up and plan ahead so you are not left waiting until the last minute and then saying you were not aware of what was needed to begin the school year, to play their sport etc. Plan, plan, plan ahead! I too have been there myself. Life can get busy so we will forget sometimes.
*Remember if it's recommended then you as the parent have the right to verbally decline that vaccination. If it's required then you either have to get those vaccinations or you as the parent can choose exemption options (do your research). I support you as the parent having the right to choose whatever works for your family.
I simply need one of the following:
-The vaccination record showing your child received the vaccinations required by the state of Virginia
-The exemption form that worked for your family (medical from your doctor or religious that is notarized)
MOBILE DENTIST
A last reminder about ** April 5th the Smile Program/in-school - Mobile Dentist will be at EMS** IF WE HAVE ENOUGH PARTICIPATION TO HOLD THIS EVENT!!
You may sign your child up online at the below link:
Forms were sent home with your student as well. But the easiest way is the above link. That will get your child signed up quickly and efficiently.
If you have any questions please feel free to call them at 1-888-833-8441
I hope you have a happy and healthy April!
Blessings, Nurse Julie

These students at EMS are amazing! I enjoyed getting to know these eight students a little more as I recognized them for the Principal Spotlight...

Michael is an outstanding and responsible student. He consistently demonstrates a desire to learn and excel in all of his classes. One of Michael’s greatest strengths is his work ethic. He is a diligent student who always puts in the time and effort to succeed. Not only does he work hard to excel himself, but he also is a great peer to his classmates. He is always helping others to understand and encourages them to do their best.
Overall, Michael is an excellent student and is a positive role model for his peers, and is definitely an asset to every classroom he enters. There is no doubt that he will continue to achieve great things and make a positive impact on those around him. We can’t wait to see all that Michael achieves.
