South Elementary Mustangs
December Newsletter 2022-23
Message from the Principal / Mensaje de parte de la Directora
Dear Families of South Elementary Mustangs,
As we enter the holiday season and begin to draw near to the end of first semester, I again would just like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude at South Elementary for your support and partnership in preparing our South Mustangs to be FUTURE READY! Each day we commit to our purpose and work to best prepare our students for whatever future it is that they are dreaming of and you are such an important part of that work. Thank you for supporting our vision at south Elementary!
We have entered the final month of the first semester of the school year and I do want to strongly emphasize the importance of consistent and regular attendance of students during the entire month of December right up until we leave for winter break, which begins Saturday, December 24th. We then return to school on Tuesday, January 10th and it is equally important that students return to school promptly in January. We provide instruction that is truly so valuable each and every day in school. We provided intentionally targeted intervention to address gaps in students’ skills as well as whole group learning experiences that move students toward grade level proficiency every day. Student absences, especially extended absences, create significant gaps in learning that prevent students from being able to grow and learn successfully. Students then struggle not only upon their return from their absence, but often struggle for years to come in school because they have developed significant gaps in learning that prevent them from having developed the necessary skills that help them with future concepts they are trying to master. Please prioritize attendance and be clear in your communication with your child about the importance of regular attendance at school from the start of the school year through to the end of the school year.
Also, one final reminder that the weather has gotten very cold in recent weeks. We will go outside for recess if the temperature is 20 degrees or warmer. Please make sure your child(ren) has a warm coat, hat, and mittens/gloves so that they are adequately prepared for outside recesses. Students need a break from the classroom, the opportunity to move around and interact with their friends, and fresh air, but they need to be able to stay warm while they are outside. Also, students who do not have gloves/mittens and snow boots are not permitted to play in the snow,
Our South Elementary staff would like to wish you the very happiest of holidays! We hope you all enjoy time with family and friends and we are looking forward to a wonderful start to the 2023 school year when students return to school in January.

They did it! On Nov. 8, 2022, 27J Schools voters made a historic investment in education through the passage of 5B, the district’s mill levy override request.
This money means additional funding for school safety, teacher and support staff compensation and STEM and Career and Technical Education learning opportunities.
27J Schools is committed to transparency and accountability every step of the way as we invest this money in our students and staff.
Parents and community members are needed to serve on a new community mill levy oversight committee that will begin its work in 2023. This group of individuals will serve as “the eyes and ears” of all 27J voters to ensure that this money is spent in alignment with voter-approved ballot language.

Work in 27J Schools / Trabajo en nuestro Distrito 27J
Dear South families,
We continue to face labor challenges. You can help. Many parents and community members support us in the important work of substituting. We can use more teacher and para substitutes. Our teacher and para workforce has grown but our sub pool has not yet recovered to match this growth. As a 27J sub, you can choose your location and your work days (hopefully at South Elementary). You can talk to me or Mrs. Cosby at 303-655-2600 or contact our 27J sub coordinator directly Julie Trujillo - 303-655-2900.
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has training and a recruitment stipend to get you started…CDE LINK. Check us out at Workat27J.com. Please share with your friends and on social media. We appreciate your continued support at South Elementary.

Did you know if you think of three things you are grateful for each day, scientists have proven that your happiness level will increase by 25% after a month? Please practice this gratitude reflection with your kiddos at home each day! Happy kids are what this world needs more of!

These donors include: Melissa Rippy:Allstate Insurance, Brantner Elementary School PTA, and the City of Brighton.
Almuerzo Gratis y a Precio Reducido:
