News and Notes for Parents at Plymouth North
A quick and meaningful December...
As I'm sure you feel as well, December has come on fast! With just 15 days of school (and a snow day dropping that down to 14) in December before Holiday Break, this month seems to be going by at warp speed! I feel like it was just a second ago that our Football team was hoisting "the Rock" on Thanksgiving, and now we're looking at the start to the final week of the calendar year!
The short month hasn't kept our staff and students from making the most of it! Our great kids led by our awesome staff already started a new sports season, held outstanding instrumental and chorus concerts, won 20 leadership awards at SkillsUSA, sent 135 students to DECA Regionals, and offered 50 new, unique courses and learning experiences to our underclassmen in the form of "Mini-Lessons" during Advisory!
2019 has been pretty amazing for Eagle Nation, and 2020 should be even better!
Looking forward to a great final week of 2019 and wishing you an incredible Holiday Break!
Go Eagles!
Pete Parcellin,
Principal

2. Advisory Mini-Lessons
Holiday Spirit
Fashion Forward
Organizing with Purpose
In October, teachers submitted lessons... and they were diverse. From "How to cook the perfect steak" to "Bosnian Language and Culture" there were all sorts of great ideas. Some of the amazing ideas that teachers put out there to teach were: Sign Language, German, Laundry Basics, Mindfulness, Stress Management Techniques, Soccer-Tennis, the Science of Tie Dye, How to make Cinnamon Winter Ornaments, How to run for political office, How to fix a bike tire, Crafting, Hand Lettering, Time Management & How to tie a tie!
In November, students had their pick of over 50 different Mini-Lessons. They put their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice into the survey, and students were assigned a class based on availability and interest!
Then, this past Wednesday during Advisory, all students, grades 9-11 attended either their chosen "Mini-Lesson" or a lesson on Social & Emotional Wellness. Teachers loved it and it seemed like the kids had a great time!
We can't wait to do it again in the Spring!
3. VPA Winter Concert Series
First, our Band (coupled with students from PSHS) performed as Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band groups. They were outstanding! They also performed some of the songs they played during their recent trip to the UK!
The next night our Chorus students performed, and did an outstanding job singing both songs that were full of thoughtful emotion and other tunes that had the crowd cheering and clapping along.
Kudos to Ms. Holmes and Mr. Grossman on two spectacular nights of VPA greatness!
4. DECA Regionals
It was another successful year for the PNHS Marketing program! Next up, all the qualifiers from this regional competition move on to the State Competition in February!
5. Winter Sports Begin!
Earlier this week, our indoor track teams started the season with 5 students ALREADY qualifying for states, and Sam Gustin ALREADY broke the school record in the High Jump, jumping 5'2"! On Thursday night, the Boys Hockey team beat South 5-0, with Jason Norwood scoring 4 goals! They played for the Gormley Cup Saturday night. Friday night both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams got wins to start the season off strong, and Saturday night started off the Girls Hockey season.
We can't wait to see all the success for Eagle Nation this season!
See you at the games!
6. E-Sports Victories
We learned this week that Austin Sheets is moving on to the Semi-Finals, scoring in the top 8 students of all of the students that competed! So impressive!
Congrats to Austin, all the players and Ms. Harrison & Ms. Carrozza for their exceptional work and amazing success!
7. Yearbook Info
8. Freshman Academy Students of the Month
Keep up the great work!
9. Social Emotional Learning Focus
Additionally, we have now given all teachers access to "Panorama" a new web-based data tool that synthesizes ASPEN data in graphs, trends and easy to read presentations to give every staff member in the building quick access to what students are improving or declining based on attendance, grade and behavior data.
This week, 9 teachers and Freshman Academy Assistant Principal Ben Janulewicz attended a two day Professional Development training to help improve our strategies in dealing with students Social/Emotional needs in our classrooms.
In each case, training is then given to the entire staff in our Faculty meetings so that we can all help develop those skills to combat what seems to be an ever-increasing need to help support our students Social/Emotional needs. We hope to continue this work at helping to support ALL our students no matter what needs they have!
10. GSA Optional Assembly 12/19
With our amazing students leading the way, the group was able to secure grant funding to bring a speaker from BostonPride, Ms. Joan Ilacqua, to speak to our students about issues that LGBTQ students face and how to handle those issues while thriving as students at PNHS. Students will have the option to attend this informative and important presentation in the Lecture Hall next Thursday during their K Block.
We are lucky to have Ms. Ilacqua here to support our students, and to give all our Eagles the option of attending this incredible opportunity next week! I'm impressed by the hard work and initiative of the students of the GSA for setting this opportunity up for students!
11. Chinese Exchange Information 2020
We also greatly appreciate those families that hosted our Chinese students last year. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to open your home to a great kid that you'll never forget for all the right reasons!
I've included a link below where you can indicate your interest and let us know if you'd be willing to host this year!
12. Thanksgiving Victory!
Congratulations to all the players who helped lead our team to a 49-0 win!
Also, congratulations to the Plymouth South Football team and Coach Fry who went on the following week to play for a state championship at Gillette! Both days were great moments for the town of Plymouth!
