Dear Families,
Happy Spring to All! I want to wish everyone a very happy and restful upcoming Spring Break! I encourage all of our students, teachers and families to use this break as a time to relax and enjoy their days off from school. As many of you know, the time after spring break really tends to "fly-by" until we hit Summer!
We are excited about several of the changes that will be taking place in the 4th marking period when we return on April 12th. This move comes with careful planning and consideration as we look to transition many students back to in person learning. I wanted to share with you again the highlights and what they will mean for the high school.
1. Effective April 12, 2021 our district will operate on a full-instructional day schedule Mondays through Thursday’s. At MHS, that will mean we will return to our regular school schedule of 40 minute periods with 27 minute lunches for both remote and hybrid students. Our instructional day will end at 2:26pm. As of now, Friday’s will continue to be a remote instructional day and the day will continue to be a shortened instructional day for students with instruction ending at 12:55pm.
2. During the lunch periods, students will be seated at desks spaced six feet apart. Rosters will be created for seating purposes during lunches. Students must sit in their assigned seats. We will continue to provide bagged lunches. Students may bring their lunches if they choose. Breakfasts will be provided as a grab-and-go option at the end of each academic day.
3. We will move from 6 feet to 3 feet, minimum, for Social Distancing. Plexiglas Shields have been ordered for all students at the HS. The shields are portable and students will carry these shields with them from period to period. They will return the shields to their 1st period class at the end of the day where they will be sanitized before the next instructional day by our custodial staff.
4. We will collapse Cohort C into Cohorts A and B and will operate on a 2-cohort model. If you are currently in cohort A or B, you will remain in those cohorts. Cohort C and those choosing to return to hybrid instruction in the 4th marking period will be notified on or before April 1st of their hybrid cohort assignment.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Attendance
Daily attendance is driven from period 1 but credit for individual courses is based on class attendance for each individual course. If a student isn’t in period 1 or is missing for half the class they may be marked absent for the day and absent from their class. Students are in danger of losing credit when they exceed 20 absences for the year in any single class.
We expect students to be on time for class and to keep their cameras on for the duration of the class. We respectfully request that all attempts are made to ensure that students have a home environment conducive to learning from 8am - 1pm so that they can fully concentrate on the instruction being provided.
Class Attendance in the Parent Portal
We have now added a new tab in the parent portal for parents and students to see attendance for each class that a student is enrolled in. It is found under the ATTENDANCE tab----- Class Attendance tab. If you should have any questions please contact the teacher first with regard to class attendance.

B.R.I.G.H.T. - Building Relationships and Inspiring Growth and Hope Together
This program is a dynamic partnership between the Middlesex public school district and University Behavioral Healthcare (UBHC), a division of Rutgers University. The primary objective of the program is to help assure that children and adolescents will obtain needed assistance in an accessible location. They provide a range of free and confidential mental health services at the Middlesex Public Schools.
Referrals will be accepted from the student’s counselor, CST case manager, or school administrator. Teachers, school nurse and other staff members with concerns should contact the student’s counselor. Referrals may also be accepted directly from students and/or parents/guardians. The school counselor, CST member or administrator will meet with the student to discuss the referral and obtain informed parent/guardian consent concerning their interest in making a referral. They will also advise the school counselor that they are making the referral.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's counselor.
