Crazy Doc's rant and raves...
- This time of year is often the most challenging for our students with images of items they will not receive, spending time with dysfunctional families, and uncertainty about meals over the weeks we are out school. Please pay attention to your students how they are reacting.
- If you send a student to the focus room please do so with one of the tickets Casey has provided, that way she knows why they are there. If they do not have a ticket they will be sent back to class.

Guided Math Connection
We are so excited to be bringing in Graham Fletcher to provide a numeracy workshop on April 3rd! Some of you may be familiar with Graham’s progression videos for numeracy. This workshop is meant to help teachers visualize the progressions for numeracy in addition and subtraction (K-2) and multiplication and division (3-5) as well as fluency in K-5 in order to better differentiate for students when implementing a workshop model. - Let me know if you are interested. Spots are first come, first served.

K-2 (8am - 11:00 am)
3-5 Teachers (12:30pm - 3:30pm)
- Please remember to give yourself credit for the events you attend. Each teacher is expected to attend 3 after school events. Next year we will move to a model where each grade level and department is represented at each PTA meeting. Here is the check in for our events so far: https://docs.google.com/a/sps.org/spreadsheets/d/1xru7fuenf01e2mb01wCoQhbrDw_zVEI_wImMFI7wA1g/edit?usp=sharing
Teacher Spotlight
Thank you to the first grade teachers: Jill, Megan, Kristi, Amy, the specialty teachers: Lalea, Dana, and Patrick, and Jill and Sherri for all you have done to make this program happen. Way to come together as a team and overcome this obstacle.
Do you have a idea for a person in the spotlight? Please let me know.
This video has sports driven media, but has a message that can be applied to anything
From Jessica
The more connected a student feels at school, the more they can learn. Conscious Discipline suggests noticing student's behavior instead of praising students behavior, because this helps build more connectedness.
For example, if a student raises their hand to answer your question, instead of stating "I like how Susie raised her hand" you might state "I noticed Susie raised her hand which allowed the rest of the class to have a turn to share". This builds an understanding of connectedness among the class, instead of just a praise point from the teacher.
Conscious Discipline teaches that classrooms that are based on judgments (good job, bad job) and competition breed conflict. If a student doesn't feel safe then behavior systems such as class dojo or clip charts won't work. We must build a culture of connectedness in our classrooms before these behavior systems are truly effective.
Let's all try to build more connectedness here at school by noticing students behavior instead of praising. Additional ways to build connectedness would be to build in rituals throughout your day that include the following 4 components: eye contact, physical touch, playfulness, and presence.
