Reader-Friendly Classroom Libraries
Oceanside, Spring 2019
This flyer will serve to help you get started. The most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to develop your library, just the best way for your students and your classroom.
Have fun with this in the coming months, and reach out for help and with questions at any time!
Let's Start with Unpacking
Be sure to inventory your books. A careful inventory means you've received all that was purchased. At the same time, you might want to label the books with the reading level and the grade level in some discreet way. Some teachers label books along the pages, write the letter on the back, or use a sticker. Grade level labels will ensure the collection stays with the designated grade level over the years. (Some schools are using a colored dot sticker on books to help designate the grade level collection it belongs with).
Below is a video that shares some tips for unpacking the TC shelves (grades 3-6). There are tips here that can help with the F&P collection as well.

What's Next?
Professional Development on harnessing classroom libraries for student growth is being planned for the 2019-2020 school year.
Additionally, principals and teachers will have an opportunity to make personalized book selections to suit their readers' and libraries' needs in the years to come.
