Social Studies and Science
This week, students have been comparing communities; discussing similarities and differences of them. We discussed what communities looked like 100 years ago. If anyone has any old time pictures of Milligan or Exeter to share with the class, the students would enjoy seeing how our communities have changed, too. Key words we have been using are urban, suburban and rural areas. I have created some Zondle games that help students practice these terms and prepare them for tests. To practice for this chapter, Where We LIve Chapter 1, go to Zondle.com and the class code is 23649-63988.
In science, we continue to discuss plants and how they grow. They have learned the about the life cycle of plants and their different parts. I also have several fun games to play using Zondle to help your child better remember the concepts discussed in class. Using the same class code (23649-63988), students may practice Plants Chapter 1.
I have checked everyone's account on a computer. When your child logs in, he/she may have to add the teacher code or go to my friend's topics. Students not having access to internet may do Zondle at school.
Writing
The 6 Traits of Writing are the steps second graders are learning to improve their writing skills. These traits help students concentrate on different aspects of writing to compose clearer meaning in their stories. To enhance the 6 Traits, students are also using strategies recently presented to the EM elementary staff. A color coded system helps identify areas in which more details could be added. Using this strategy, students have been working on group stories. Next week, the plan is to begin individual writing pieces using these strategies.
