Those Shoes
This picture book covers a topic that most kids can relate to in elementary or middle grades- wanting the "cool" shoes that are currently popular in school. All Jeremy wants is a pair of "those shoes," not the donated pair that his school counselor gives to him. His grandmother explains that they do not have enough money to buy them. They search the thrift shops for a pair but they only find a pair that is much too small. Jeremy insists on buying them anyway even though they hurt when he wears them. In time, he sees a fellow student with worn-out shoes who covets "those shoes" as well. Jeremy struggles with the thought of giving them away but realizes an act of kindness is never wasted.
The Scarecrow
The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry is a sweet tale of an unlikely friendship. The Scarecrow is a solitary figure, standing alone in his field until one day a tiny crow falls from a broken nest. The Scarecrow befriends the fallen crow and takes care of him until the crow is strong enough to fly away. A year passes and the lonely Scarecrow stands alone in the field. "Then something drops from mid-air- a large black crow standing there. Scarecrow arms are open wide- crow spreads his wings and swoops inside."
