Mrs. Berry's JES Counseling Corner
November 2016
Happy November JES!
Recap of October
I was able to visit the K, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms! I missed the 2nd graders due to Fall Break.
In the K and 1 classroom lessons we discussed bullying. In the 3-5 classrooms we discussed bullying and Red Ribbon Week.
BULLYING
In each classroom visited, the first part of the lesson focused on bullying. The students learned to define bullying by using the acronym MOO. Bullying is something Mean, that happens Over and over, and is On purpose! We also discussed how we can be UPSTANDERS against bullying by being a buddy/friend, interrupting the bullying, speaking out against the bullying, and telling an adult.
SCSD2 has bullying rules for the district and they are as follows:
1. We do not bully others.
2. We help students who are bullied.
3. We include students who are left out.
4. We tell an adult at school and an adult at home when someone is being bullied.
These were reviewed with the students and can be found in the student handbook.
PLEASE feel free to contact myself or any school personnel with concerns about bullying.
RED RIBBON WEEK
RRW was celebrated at the end of October and is a national campaign used to educate children on alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.
During the classroom lessons we briefly discussed RRW, we defined what a drug was (a chemical compound that changes the way your body works), we talked about medicine safety, and then played a game of Candy or Medicine?
The Candy or Medicine? game required the students to determine if the picture shown was candy or medicine. Some of the pictures were very difficult! We used this activity to discuss medicine safety, Halloween/candy safety, and answer questions as appropriate.
November Classroom Lessons
This month's lessons will focus on THANKFULNESS. The students and I will have a brief discussion about what thankfulness is, how we show it, Thanksgiving traditions, and what we are all thankful for.
At the end of the lesson there is an activity the classes will do in which the students will decorate a maple leaf by writing or drawing the thing or things they are thankful for. The leaves will then be taped up on the Thankful Tree that is on the wall as the students first walk in the building. The students are encouraged to look for their leaf and also look at the leaves of their peers and teachers.
