Making Measurement Meaningful

We completed our measuring unit this month. The students had a great time working with the rulers, meter sticks, and yard sticks. We spent time measuring items in our classroom as well as measuring our friends. They loved the hands on activities!

Interrupting Chicken

We had a special guest visit our classroom this month! Mr. Schmidt came into our classroom to read the story Interrupting Chicken to the class. The students then engaged in an activity that had them sort various behaviors seen in a classroom, some good and others bad. They discussed what it looked like to be a respectful student versus an "interrupting chicken". This was a great lesson and a good reminder for our students about the importance of being respectful to others. Thank you Mr. Schmidt!

Accelerated Reading

Every day we have 15-20 minutes of Accelerated Reading (AR) time. Students have uninterrupted time to read silently. When they are finished reading a book two times (except chapter books), they may take an AR test. Each student has their own goal and strive to meet it by doing well on their AR tests! This quarter I am pleased to say that 100% of the class met their goal! As a reward, we watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! They loved it!

Please be sure to check your child's folder for homework each week. On Monday, they have Spelling that is due on Friday. Math homework generally comes home every Tuesday and Thursday. Students should also be reading 15-20 minutes each night.

I think it is crucial to note the importance of starting homework habits now. In 3rd grade, your child may or may not have more homework. From my experience with my own 3rd graders now, this homework is considered a graded assignment for some teachers and missing assignments count against their grades. Next year your child will be receiving letter grades (A, A-, B+, B, B-....D+, D, D-, etc.). Please take time to help your child understand the importance of completing assignments, and turning them in on time. This will instill healthy academic habits as they become middle and high school students.
