Science Center Lab Field Trip
February 5, 2019
Children's Science Center: Explore. Create. Inspire.
Twenty students, two chaperones and two teachers set out to Fair Oaks Mall to explore the Children's Center Lab. Upon arrival we were greeted by Sue Fajer, Field Trip Coordinator, and ushered into the Experiment Bar. Students rotated between four different experiences allowing them to apply the engineering design process and experiment with scientific investigative reasoning. Check out the pics below to see what we were were doing!
First Up: Tower Challenge
Applying Background Knowledge
Students used their background knowledge from Star Base to share with their fellow architects and in their own design.
Teamwork
Teamwork is a super power and these three from different schools rocked it!
Tower with a Curve
Adding artistic flair to their architectural design.
Scientific Investigation: The Experiment Bar
Experiment Bar
Students gathered around in the very modern lab to a receive their instructions for the "Mystery Powders" lab.
Scientists Collaborate
Students worked together with fellow scientists to observe, record reactions and analyze data to determine the mystery powder.
Scientific Investigation
Students used their investigative skills to make observations about chemical reactions.
Tinker Shop
The workshop area allowed students to design, build and test hovercrafts using a variety of materials. Students tested their designs using the wind tunnel and had the opportunity to redesign and try again.
Inspiration Hub
Lastly, students had the opportunity to experience hands-on, interactive exhibits exemplifying real-world STEM applications. Students interacted with the robotic arm, mini wind farm, gear table and a marble run.
