What are some ways to cook fruit?
Cooking fruit dates back hundreds of years; we usually think that fruit is only used in baked goods, but fruits are used in other applications in the culinary world. We can cook foods in many ways including: boiling, grilling, baking, steaming, stir-frying, sauteing, roasting, stewing, blanching, and even microwaving.
Zest and Enzymatic Browning
- Zest is the outer part of the skin, on citrus fruits, that is used for flavoring
- Enzymatic browning is the chemical reaction when oxygen comes in direct contact with the fruit or vegetable, and causes it to turn a different color, have a different taste, and have a different texture.
Poaching and Coulis
- Poaching is the process of cooking by simmering in a small amount of liquid
- Coulis is a thick sauce made from fruits or vegetables
About Cooking Fruits
- The methods of boiling, blanching, stewing, and steaming involves submerging the fruit in hot water. Typically, these are used for the more delicate fruits.
- And the methods of grilling, baking, roasting, stir-frying, microwaving involves cooking fruit on direct heat.
