Literacy/Reading
This week students have been learning about biographies. We read a story together about Malala Yousafzai and learned all about why she is an influential person. The information we learned from reading was put into a graphic organizer. We will use this graphic organizer to write a summary about Malala's life and accomplishments. Independently, students read and created a graphic organizer for Henry Ford.
Next week, your child will be researching another influential person of their choice. They will either be working on writing a monologue or a poem about this person. These dramatic readings are going to be awesome!
Math
This week in math we will continue to divide fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions. We will have a quiz on dividing fractions next Wednesday, March 22. We will also continue to review adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions so we are ready for our fraction unit test at the end of March.
Word problems continue to be the biggest struggle with students. Being able to comprehend the question and what operation is needed is a struggle as these word problems can be very tricky, especially if they are multi step problems. If you are looking for some extra math practice to get your child ready for the end of grade tests, this would be the area to focus on.
Science
This week in Science, we looked at population growth and declining populations to see the effects on food webs and environments. We also spent time examining energy pyramids, food webs, and aquatic ecosystems. On Friday, March 17th, we will take our first Ecosystems Quiz (see the study guide for more specific information).
Next week will be busy. We will spend time presenting our Ecosystems Projects, which are due on Tuesday, March 21st. That week we will also be beginning to look at the different biomes. Then we will conclude the week by taking an Ecosystems Vocabulary Test on Friday, March 24th, so students need to start studying their Ecosystems vocabulary list (available on their Google Science Classroom).
