Rule 1 - The Golden Rule Still Applies Online.

"Treat Others the Way You Would Want to be Treated"

When we interact with each other in person we are taught to follow the Golden Rule which is "treat others the way you would want to be treated". The same rule applies online. Good manners and courtesy are just as important online as they are in person. Behind a computer or cellphone screen, we sometimes forget that there is another person with feelings on the other side. Before you send a text, email, or instant message think to yourself "Is this something I would say in person? Would I like it if someone said it to me?" If the answer is no to both questions then it is better to not send that text, email, or instant message. "Treat others the way you would want to be treated"

Rule 2 - No Bullies Allowed!

Yes, bullying is still bullying even if it is done over the internet. If you say unkind things to someone or about someone in a consistent and harassing manner, it is considered bullying. The same rules apply for the internet. If you are doing it behind a computer or cellphone, the only thing that changes is the name. Instead of being called bullying, it is called cyber bullying because you are using the internet, whether it be on a cellphone or computer, to harass and hurt someone. As said in Rule 1, it is best to follow the Golden Rule. "Treat Others the Way You Would Want to Be Treated" If you wouldn't say something to someones face, then don't say it to them online. Even behind a computer screen, we all have feelings that could get very hurt.

Rule 3 - CLICK WITH CARE!

Not only should you follow the Golden Rule online, but you should be careful of how much personal information you reveal online. Follow this rule of thumb: If you would not say it to a stranger walking down the street then you shouldn't say it online. Always ask a parent before you sign up for any website that requires you to type in your personal information. Click With Care!
