第三课

职场穿着

Introduction

Your appearance in the workplace is crucial to your success in your career. That is true in the professional settings of any part of world. This lesson will introduce you to the dress code of the workplace in China. Even though there are some cultural differences, the general dress code is the same. However, one would argue that Chinese tend to be more conservative in the workplace. This will probably change with time. After all, the concept of "conservative" is changing too.

A Changing Workplace

During the Cultural Revolution (1960's), all Chinese wore almost the same style of clothing and the same color, green or blue. Since the late 1970's, many changes have been taking place, and clothing is totally different. Fashions, styles, and brand names are taken into consideration when buying clothing, especially for the young generations. In workplace, people dress more and more professionally. Today, Chinese business attire is conservative for men and women. Men are expected to wear suits and ties. Women are expected to dress modestly in suits, dresses, or skirts with conservative tops. Bright colors and very high heels are not appropriate. Chinese people, like those of any other nation, prefer to present themselves as professionals in the workplace.
