Pangolin Preservation Across the Nation
The pangolin was discovered in 1821 and was placed on the endangered list recently in 2014. They live in central and south Africa, had an initial population size of about 175,000. They are a type of anteater that has scales made of keratin, which is what our hair is made of. Pangolins are solitary, nocturnal animals that sleep in burrows in a wide territory. When threatened, it rolls into a ball and starts to smell really bad, like a skunk. Illegal poaching and selling of their scales and meat has led to a dramatic decrease in population size. If pangolins become extinct, There will be a higher population of termites and other ants and the poachers will move on to hunt different banned animals. A trade ban of scales in many different countries have been in effect since 2002, and there is a large fine if you are caught hunting or capturing a pangolin.
