Should Smoking be Banned?
By:Ken Dowling
Claim
Smoking should most definitely be banned. Smokers would say that people should have the right to smoke because this is America so they should be allowed to do what they want to do. But most people would disagree. Smoking kills. Smoking hurts a persons body. Smoking used to be thought and advertised as being good for the body and makes people stronger and healthier.(Landau 7) The truth is that it is very harmful to the human body and many people die from it every year. Smoking should be banned because it causes many deaths by cancer/diseases, harms a persons organs, and has many bad side effects.
Deaths
Smoking causes many deaths. Smoking kills about 400,700 Americans each year and causes 1/5 deaths in the U.S. ("Health") Smokers die about 13-14 years earlier than non-smokers . ("Smoking") It increases chances of heart disease by 2 to 4 times, stroke by 2 to 4 times, and lung cancer by 25-26 times.("Effects") If you don't want to die faster than a normal healthy person, then you probably shouldn't smoke.
Harms the body
Smoking harms almost every organ in a body. It weakens the bones in a body and makes the bones easier to fracture.("Effects") It also could lead to optic nerve damage which could lead to blindness.("Effects") Another thing is that it could harm the voice box and then the person will lose their voice. If you don't want a weaker body that can't see or speak then you shouldn't smoke.
