Find Something FUN to do this Summer!
By: Shaina Thaves
Summer is a great time to get outside and be active. Here are a few ideas to try during summer:
Visit an amusement park - Amusement parks are awesome to visit because it’s good exercise to walk around the park almost the whole day. You can feel the rush of air on your face on the rides, especially if you’re on a rollercoaster.
Go camping - Going camping is a perfect activity for summer because it is inexpensive and lots of fun. Camping is perfect for any outdoor person in your family or if you just like going outside in general.
Go canoeing - This is a great idea if you want to get out of your house for a day to do something on a lake. If you are definitely an outdoor person, this activity is perfect for you. Check out the Sheboygan Marsh’s website for information on renting canoes. http://www.sheboygancounty.com/government/departments-f-q/planning-and-conservation/facilities/parks/sheboygan-marsh-park-campground
Visit an aquarium - Going to an aquarium is a perfect rainy day activity if you want to get out of your house for a day to explore marine life. This activity is great for those who love marine life or want to explore more about different plants and animals. Here is one possible choice: http://www.sheddaquarium.org/
Visit the Quarry Beach - The Quarry Beach is a great place to visit because they offer a wide variety of fun activities to do including paddle boating and the inflatable obstacle course in the middle of the lake. Pro tip: watch out for the seaweed! Check out their website for more information: http://quarrybeach.com/
Visit Vollrath Bowl - Vollrath Bowl is a great place to visit because you can have a picnic, play disc golf, and they even offer movie nights on certain nights. During the movie night (sponsored by The Sheboygan Recreation Department), you can have a chance to have your ticket number called with the possibility of winning a prize like free passes to Blue Harbor. http://www2.sheboygan.k12.wi.us/recreation/
Fundraiser Success
By Panther Press Staff
During the month of April, classrooms competed in a coin war to help raise money for the Sheboygan County Humane Society. Ms. Dzurick says, "I could not be more proud of our students and their desire to help others! They did so well with their collection for the food pantry, and now for the Humane Society, they really hit it out of the park!!"
The winners were:
8th Grade-Wisman's Class
7th Grade-Neitzke's Class
6th Grade-Bekkum's Class
In total, our awesome students raised $893.55. Grade level competition was tough with the bill contributions deciding some of the final results.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated.

In the Know with the Farnsworth SRO
The end of this school year is within sight and very soon the number of school days will be in the single digits. I’d like to wish all of our eighth grade students the best as you enter your high school journey. It’s been a pleasure working with all of you!
Summer is a break for all of us- a break from class, other students, teachers, etc. I know one thing that won’t change is how most of us won’t take a break from social media. I read an interesting article recently about the dangers of “Fear of Missing Out”, or “FOMO”. I’m sure many of you have heard of this phenomenon or at least know what it refers to.
For those who don’t know, social media FOMO basically refers to anxiety (or worry, fear, etc.) that things are happening right now which we won’t know about unless we’re not constantly online. For example, if I don’t have “John Smith” on my Facebook or Snapchat feed, I won’t know what “John Smith” is posting or saying about me- even if I can’t stand being around John Smith. Sound familiar?
The problem here is that our lives become one big social media post. We’re stuck being reactive and are always waiting for the next post, to see how many “likes” we can get, or whatever status is on the app we’re using.
This summer I encourage you to get away from this fear. Instead of constantly waiting to see what other people are thinking, saying, feeling, eating… just go out and live life. Hang out with friends, walk on the beach, play a game of basketball, go fishing, or do whatever else it is that actually makes good memories. Some of my fondest memories have been as simple as going for a run with my dog by north beach on a warm summer day. I can still hear the seagulls and waves and smell the lakefront air in my mind. Reading a Facebook or Instagram post doesn’t quite do the same thing, does it?
Enjoy your summer!

Memorial Day
Lots of people celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day when we remember those people who died in active military service. This year it is celebrated on May 29th. This federal holiday is observed all over the United States. Memorial Day became a holiday in 1971. It used to be known as Decoration Day. There are different ways to celebrate Memorial Day. For example, you can go to a parade and most people wear red, white, and blue.
Band Students Head to Madison
By: Ivy Kohn
A group of band students went to Madison on Friday, April 21st, to see the UW Madison Marching Band. The University of Wisconsin Marching Band was created in 1885 as the Wisconsin Regimental Band. Now it is conducted by Michael Leckrone, an 80 year old who recently had heart surgery. The Band performs at the Kohl center and in 1975 only 450 people watched the show. Today, up to 25,000 people for attend the yearly spring concert. The University of Wisconsin Marching Band is composed of about 300 members.

Helping the Environment
By: Panther Press Staff
A new club has started at Farnsworth to help students learn more about our environment. Below is an interview with Ms. Wisman, 8th grade Science teacher and advisor of the club.
What is the purpose?
The purpose of Environmental Club is to educate people about protecting and preserving the natural environment.
What is your current project?
Environmental Club is starting a recycling program at the school. We will be collecting plastic markers for the Crayola ColorCycle Program. If you are interested in helping us out, please bring the markers to the main office. Please feel free to drop off your used markers, highlighters, and dry erase markers! Any brand will be accepted! Highlighters, dry-erase markers, etc… All are part of the program! Basically, anything that has marker-like ink and is enclosed in a plastic case is recyclable! Here’s link to the ColorCycle FAQ. If you are unsure of whether or not it will be accepted, you can always drop them off and Environmental Club will sort them out!
http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle/frequently-asked-questions.aspx
Who can join?
If you have an interest in the environment, animals, and nature, Environmental Club is for you! We have members from 6th-8th grade.
When do you meet?
We usually meet twice a month on Fridays right after school. If we have a meeting coming up, you’ll hear about it in the morning announcements. If you’re interested in joining, you are welcome to come to any meeting! You don’t have to be at the first meeting of the year.
How/Why did it get started?
Environmental Club was started to bring together students interested in caring for nature. I have a background in Marine Biology and absolutely love hiking, gardening, hiking, etc. I wanted to share that with students and provide a place for them to explore environmental activities with their peers. We’re still in the beginning stages, but we’re developing some exciting plans for the upcoming school year. If members have new ideas they want to participate in (such as bird watches, recycling initiatives, etc.) we love to hear them!
Any other projects in the works besides the markers?
We’re working on developing garden boxes to plant crops on school property. Eventually, the plan is to grow veggies in order to host a community dinner. They’re still in the early-planning stages, but hopefully we’ll get something running next year. We currently have a worm bin in my room for vermicomposting. The worms are currently working on decomposing an apple and orange peel for us to fertilize our garden next year!
A few students are interested in going through SCUBA certification. We have several ideas for fund-raisers next year to make that possible. SCUBA allows the opportunity for students to explore the ocean environment and learn about the aquatic world that is quickly changing due to climate change.
Now is your opportunity to help change the world around you! Act today!
7th Grade Travels to Green Bay
On Wednesday, May 3rd, the seventh grade took a field trip to the Weidner Center in Green Bay to see the play, “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” The play took place during the Holocaust, at one of the concentration camps, which the seventh grade was learning about in ELA. In my opinion, the play was very well done by the college students, and it was an interesting and fun experience.
Books on Bikes is Back
Coming to a park near you: free books! The librarians from the school district will be biking to city parks this summer to give away free books and freeze pops.
You can check our web site at booksonbikessheboygan.org to find out which parks we’ll be visiting on which days. We’re usually out from 10am to noon on Wednesdays. Look for bright orange bikes pulling trailers, and when you see us, don’t be shy -- come on over and get free loot! You can enjoy a refreshing ice pop and search through our trailers to find a book you’ll love.
Reading a great book is a perfect way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Besides, reading over the summer, even just a book or two, will help you keep your skills sharp so you can start school next fall at the top of your game.
