Mr. Bennett's Classroom Update

March 23rd - April 3rd

In writing, we are learning about the Personal Narrative (a true story you were a part of). This week we will continue to learn about the different parts of a Personal Narrative (Introduction, Body, and Conclusion). By the end of this week, your Third Grader will have chosen their first Personal Narrative topic. The prompt for our first Personal Narrative done in class will be, "A time when you felt surprised".

Next week, we will begin looking at how we can revise our first drafts. We will be specifically focusing on adding voice and feeling into our writing. Your Third Grader will also be working on making sure they have good organization in their writing and checking to see if they have told their story in the correct sequence.

We will be very busy these next two weeks in reading. This week we will be completing the final week of Unit 5. Due to the Unit Assessment next week we will only be covering new skills this upcoming week, March 23 - 27. Next week, we will be completing the Unit 5 Assessment.

Here is a breakdown of skills and strategies we will be covering over the next week.

Genre: Expository Text

Comprehension Skill: Cause and Effect

Comprehension Strategy: Ask and Answer Questions

Vocabulary Strategy: Homophones

Grammar: Pronoun-Verb Contractions

Spelling: Open Syllables (CVC Pattern) - Spelling test Friday, March 27th

There will not be a spelling test the week March 23rd.

Home Reading Sheets (green sheet) will be due on:

- Friday, March 27th

- Thursday, April 2nd - This sheet will be due on Thursday because we do not have school Friday, April 3rd.

If you are looking for ideas to check your student's reading comprehension at home here are some questions you might ask:

- Have your student write down a question or two they would like to find out the answer to as they continue to read their story. Then have your student write out the answer to their question once they have discovered the answer.

- You might also have your student write down a cause and effect or two from a story they are reading.

We have spent the past few weeks studying Geometry. We will continue our study of Geometry by looking at congruancy, symmetry, perimeter, and area over the next few days.

We will then turn our attention to reviewing some of the concepts we learned this year. When we complete this review we will also be using extension activities to prepare your Third Grader for Fourth Grade. The first unit we will review with your Third Grader is place value. During this unit, we will review place value of rational numbers, rounding, comparing, and ordering numbers.

Unit Studies

This week in unit studies we will be continuing our study of "Consumer and Community Health". During this week, we will be talk about being an active community member, our environment, and protecting our environment. My plan right now is to test this Friday, March 27th, but this may change so please keep an eye on your child's assignment notebook. I will also send home several worksheets to review the evening before the test.

Next week, we will begin our last Social Studies unit. We will be focusing on how communities provide goods and services. Near the end of this unit, we will be going on the Downtown Walking Tour. The Downtown Walking Tour will take place Friday, May 8th. I will be sending more information home about this tremendous learning opportunity in the near future.
