Schools had to be built on the goldfields but because new goldfields were popping up all over Australia it took long periods before schools were established. Educators ranged from young teenagers to not very qualified school teachers. Parents would try to school thier children but only if they had been educated themselves.

Many women played the role of carer for their children. They would cook, clean and sew for the men and children. Some women made money by dancing for the men whilst others sold jams, bread and butter.
