December 2017
Update from Principal Mrs. Toleman
I continue to be amazed at the outpouring of support from our Moreau community. First it was the items for the hurricane victims and then your tremendous support for the Food Wars. Because of all of you, we were able to donate over 1,500 items to the Moreau Community Center. Thank you for all you do to support our community outreach initiatives.
I wish you all a wonderful holiday season. As I say often, I am truly thankful to be a part of Moreau.
Fondly,
Rebecca

Kindergarten News!
December is one of the most exciting months in Kindergarten! The children are learning so much in school and are really looking forward to the snow and winter activities. Your child will continue to work on sound spelling and writing in class. Math has been really fun because we are experts with the numbers and 2D/3D shapes. We will begin Module 3 in Mathematics which is comparing length, weight, and capacity. We will also be learning about the December celebrations around the world and the beginning of a new season, WINTER!
The children will need to have all the First Trimester sight words, letters and their sounds mastered. Now that the letters have all been introduced, practicing letter formation and printing neatly from top to bottom is an important skill to work on nightly, as well as independently applying their letter sounds to read and write.
Please be sure to dress your child in layers and look for notes from your child’s teacher to see if we will be going outside to play in the snow or make a snowman!
A big THANK YOU to our parents and classroom helpers who have been graciously organizing parties and working in our classrooms this year. You may be getting a phone call to send in party supplies for our future celebrations. Thanks again for all that you do to make Moreau School a great Place to be! Please remember to send in a snack with your child everyday!
We look forward to a wonderful 2018 year!!!

Second Grade
Hello All,
We hope that everyone was able to enjoy their Thanksgiving vacation. Hopefully you all were able to spend time with your friends and families all while doing things that you enjoy.
Now that we have moved on to December we hope that the students are prepared for the excitement of the month ahead. We will be decorating our gingerbread houses on December 20th. We will be sending information home soon on what we will need to make this event a success. Also, be on the lookout for information about our classroom parties.
On the educational side of things all of the students have been working hard as we continue to focus on our Readers and Writers Workshop. Math has been extremely positive as we work on our third module of the year, place value.
As always, please continue to read with your children every night. We look forward to seeing you in the month of December.

Third Grade
In math, we're still working on memorizing our math facts! We've started Module 3, and we're learning our 6-12 facts this month! Watch out, we're sharp!
Fourth Grade Veteran's Night!
4th grade Veteran's Night was a huge success! We welcomed 20 veterans to Moreau. We showed our appreciation to our brave veterans by singing the Star Spangled Banner, speaking about our veterans, and we presented each veteran with a special gift made by our 4th graders.
Fifth Grade
Fifth graders continue to work along steadily. In reading, we just finished up the book Wonder. Students loved reading the story through the eyes of multiple different characters. We were even able to take a field trip to watch the movie! We will spend the month of December learning how to tackle complex nonfiction text.
In math, we have wrapped up our unit on dividing and multiplying numbers and are now moving on to study fractions.
In social studies, students will participate in our annual trade fair. Students are required to make 24 handmade items to barter and trade with their classmates. Our fifth graders have come up with some interesting and creative crafts. They will become very savvy at bargaining with their peers. It is great fun!!
In science, we just finished up our unit on the solar system. During December, we will begin to study Earth’s energy and ecosystems. Students will get practice applying what they are learning in reading to learn more about ecosystems.
In writing, our fifth graders are working to write and illustrate their own hardcover children’s books. We learned all about the fantasy genre and now are working to create our own winter fantasy stories. Boy and girls also will have the opportunity to share their books with other classes at Moreau. What creative authors we have!!
