Welcome Back!
Dear Families,
We have had a big month of events at Ladd Acres. It is always impressive and fun to reflect on all the wonderfully amazing things that are happening at our school. What an awesome community!
Our first Internet Safety Night with Tobias and Imlay targeted our 5th and 6th graders along with their families. We had a great turnout of folks wanting to learn about how to keep their child safe on the internet. Look for a flyer to come home soon. In the meantime, it is never too early to start talking to your student about digital citizenship and safety. Common Sense Media is a helpful family tool that you can use at home (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/privacy-and-internet-safety).
We have two new spaces being introduced to our Ladd Acres community in the spring. The first is our Ladd Acres Community Learning Garden. With the help of a parent volunteer, our PTA and local donations, our community garden will be expanding. The garden will focus on plants, trees, fruits and vegetables found in our area and in China. We are looking for help with the construction of a fence and boxes. If you are interested in helping, please contact the office. Our second space is a Wellness and Motor room which will be located in our main building. Donations have been provided and are aiding in the construction to create a calming space for students to access throughout the day. Students will learn calming strategies, ways to regulate stress and anxiety as well as increase movement. This will help in the success of our students at school and home. Both are great projects and are going to provide our students with social, emotional and instructional learning strategies.
Have a great spring break. Remind your students to read, and enjoy your time together as a family!
Warm wishes,
Francesca Sinapi

State Testing
Our students have started some of our annual state testing. Our English Learners are just about done with ELPA 21 testing; a test that measures their progress with english language proficiency. Our 5th graders completed their first round of OAKS Science testing. Students needing to retake the exam will do so in April and May.
Starting after spring break, students in grades 3rd - 6th will be participating in SBAC state testing. Times are broken down to accommodate all our testing students. Securing our instructional time is at the forefront of our planning. If your student is going to be out of town during testing, please let your student’s teacher know. If it has not already, more information will be coming home from teachers.

District Information
Student Achievement Report and Strategic Plan Update - HSD’s Student Achievement Report for the 2015-16 school year is now available on our website. The report provides an at-a-glance look at how students are performing in various areas that are linked to graduation attainment and post-secondary success. Also recently updated are the Year 1 Work Plan and SMART goals for our Strategic Plan. Look for in-depth articles on these topics in our upcoming District newsletter, A Look Inside Hillsboro Schools, which is due to arrive in mailboxes in mid-April.
District Kinder Fairs April 6 and 27 - Parents of incoming kindergartners are invited to attend one of two upcoming Kindergarten Fairs: April 6 at Lincoln Street Elementary School, 801 NE Lincoln St.; or April 27 at Witch Hazel Elementary School, 4950 SE Davis Rd. Both fairs are from 6 p.m. to 8pm, will provide free food, fun literacy and math activities, information on kindergarten registration and community resources, and will offer a free book to each kindergartner.
Safe and Welcoming Schools - We now have a Safe and Welcoming Schools page on our district website.
Multiple Perspectives Dialogue Session - HSD welcomes your participation in the upcoming equity-focused dialogue session, Multiple Perspectives: An Interracial Dialogue, with a topic of: “Students Say the Darndest Things: A Panel Discussion—My Experience as a Student in HSD,” on Wednesday, April 12, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the South Meadows Middle School library, 4690 SE Davis Rd.
The purpose of these sessions is to bring the community together to engage in a facilitated discussion about issues of race and racism and how that impacts our lives and the community in which we live. Participants are encouraged to share their personal experiences so that we may all learn from one another and build greater awareness and understanding.
Distinguished Youth Award - The Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking nominations for the Hillsboro Distinguished Youth Award. The process to nominate is even easier than before! Nominators can go to the Chamber’s website, enter their name and contact information, and the name and category of the person they are nominating. Once the window closes on March 31, someone from the Awards Committee will contact the nominator with additional information.
