What Will Canada Look Like In 2060
By: Parmandeep
Introduction
What do you expect Canada will look like in 2060? Some people believe that Canada will become over populated, some believe there wont be enough food or jobs to support families. This might not be true. I will discuss why in the article below.
What you should expect of Canada in 2060
This report will cover what Canada will look like in 2060, how Canada's demography will change, what Canada' birth and death rate might be, what countries will Canada's immigrants come from, will immigrants be coming from the same countries as today, and how or First Nations community will change.
First Nations Canada (Current)
Most people believe that the first nations are as good as dead but this is not true. There are many first nations out there like Wab Kinew. The main difference between the FN (first nations) and other Canadian citizens is the Indian Act which gives first natives the "Indian status", local first native governments, and the management of reserve land and communal monies. Another difference is that the first nations are not given the same opportunities. The First Nations living on reserves are not getting the same opportunities as the rest of Canada because they are only given so much money for their area that they live in.
Canada's Current Birth, Death, And Natural Increase Rate
Canada's current birth rate is pretty low, in fact Canada's rate of birth is ranked 190, having 10.28 births per 1000 people. Canada's current death rate is 7 deaths per 1000 people. According to the graph above Canada's birth (red) and death (blue) rate have started to level off since 1901. Canada's birth rate has decreased because women and men have both gotten more knowledgeable, women have started to work which means less time for children, and there is also not as much of a need for children since they don't bring in money or have to do work. The reason Canada's death rate has decreased is because Canada has gotten more medical knowledge and medicine since the 1990s. As you can see in the graph above Canada has an increase of births around 1946-1960. These people are the "baby boomers", people born after the second world war. The graph help proves my point because it shows the period that the baby boomers were born and it also shows the birth and death rate leveling off.
Immigration To Canada (Current)
The top three countries that immigrate into Canada currently are; China, India, and the Philippines. Most of these immigrants come to for job opportunities, business and industrial opportunities, great education, great health and welfare, and because it is one of the safest countries in the world. The push factors of these countries are mainly lack of job opportunities, pollution, people feel they are not safe, and in the Philippines, there are many natural disasters which many fear. The main provinces that many immigrants settle in are Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. We cant exactly say what countries will immigrate into Canada in 2060 but we can predict.
First Nations 2060
Personally, I believe that the first nations are going to be just like the other Canadian citizens because they have their own culture and background, but that doesn't mean that they are not a part of the population. Look at Wab Kinew for example, he is a First Native. Wab Kinew believes that we should get rid of the Indian Act because if it wouldn't work in other parts of the world, why would it work in Canada. I believe that if we get rid of the Indian act, the First Nations may move to other parts of Canada. While still keeping their culture, they will get more opportunities now that they have moved to other parts of Canada. I believe this because the first nations living on reserves just don't get the same opportunities as the rest of Canada. And if Canada gets rid of the Indian Act, I believe that the first are going to have the same demography in 2060 like the other citizens because FN men and women will also get the same or similar opportunities as them, so that means the same medical knowledge, education, health, welfare, and medicine, and thats the reason that the FN are going to have the same demography as the other Canadians in 2060.
Canadian Birth, Death, And Natural Increase Rate 2060
The cause of Canada's natural increase rate probably being negative around 2060 is because of the "baby boomers". This is because the baby boomers are now around the age of 40-55 years and Canada's life expectancy is around 81 years of age which means they will live for about 30-40 more years. In 45 years it will be 2060 and the baby boomers are expected to live this long. So baby boomers will begin to die around this time and since the birth rate is low, the natural increase rate will be in the negatives. Since Canada's natural increase rate will be in the negatives, the population will decrease.
Immigration 2060
As I have said before, we can not say what countries will immigrate into Canada. Right now we have immigrants mainly from India, Philippines, and China. All of these countries have high populations. A high population means less job opportunities, which results in less money for medicine, education, and other basic needs. We can predict that the countries that immigrate into Canada in 2060 will be countries with high populations and similar push factors as the countries that immigrate into Canada today. We can also say that the countries that mainly immigrate into Canada today will still have high numbers of immigration in 2060 because many of their family members will probably be living in Canada and they would want to be with them, resulting in many family class immigrants. The provinces that the immigrants will mainly settle in may vary on the job availabilities and other opportunities. Many immigrants may settle in Alberta or Saskatchewan because there is a great amount of job availabilities. In 2060, Canada might also raise the number of immigrants allowed to enter into Canada per year because, if the birth rate is low and the death rate is higher than the birth rate, Canada might need to rely on its immigrants to shape the country, keep its economy, and population.
The graph above proves my point that the birth rate of Canada has decreased over the years and is starting to stay in one area. In the graph, you can see, starting around 1966 there is a major drop in the birth rate. You can also see that around 1976-2011, the birth rate has started to level off at around 1.5-2 births per 1000 and it may stay this way or decrease for the next amount of years because there is not much of a need for children as there once was.
As you can see in the graph above, the birth rate has started to decrease since the 1990s and the immigration has increased. This graph helps proves my point because i shows that the birth rate has started to decrease and the immigration has started to rise. I predict that at one point of time, the immigration rate could be higher than the birth rate.

Conclusion
To conclude my report, I have stated that the Canadian population will decrease by 2060 unless more immigrants are allowed to enter. I have stated that the first nations should get rid of the Indian act and get better/similar opportunities as the rest of Canada. And I have also stated that immigration numbers should rise in 2060 if Canada wants to keep a stable population, and the countries that immigrate into Canada today will probably be the ones immigrating into Canada in 2060.
