York Center Family Newsletter 5/13

Our York Center Staff would like to thank all of the families that helped to make Teacher Appreciation Week so special! We truly enjoyed the delicious luncheon and all of the treats and snacks! The posters put up around the building were so creative and made us smile! Thank you for taking the time to make the week a great one! We appreciate your thoughtfulness.

On Wednesday our 5th graders will be enjoying a day of fun and learning at Schafer school for the District PTA Council sponsored STEM Day! Our students are so fortunate to have this opportunity!

York Center has Earned the Water Quality Flag!

York Center earned the Water Quality Flag from SCARCE. There were several requirements to earn this flag and our Conservation Club members worked hard to complete the required tasks! As a school, we have become more aware of the importance of picking up litter that might enter our water sources and ensuring that storm drains are kept free from pollutants.

Why is Reading over the Summer important?

Big picture
Mrs. Scott, our literacy leader, gave a great presentation at our Open House on the importance of reading over the summer and how our families can help support our children. In case you missed it, I'll be sharing parts of her presentation in my weekly newsletter.

If children aren't engaged in reading over the summer, not only do they not make any gains in reading, they actually LOSE the gains they made during the school year!

Erin's Law- Child Abuse Prevention at York Center 5/14- 5/15

The YWCA of Metropolitan will be providing our annual Erin's Law sessions for our 3rd and 5th grade students on May 14th and 15th.

Here is information about Erin's Law and resources for families: http://www.erinslaw.org/

I have attached resources from the YWCA as well.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

From the Health Office: Physicals for incoming 6th Graders

All incoming 6th graders must have a new physical for 6 th grade entry.

Please take the physical form with you to your doctor. The form is from the State of Illinois Department of Human Services – be sure this is the one your doctor uses – old physical forms will not be accepted. Check to be sure all immunizations are completed and have your doctor sign and date before you leave the office.

All students starting 6th grade must have had one Tdap, 2 Varicella, 2 MMR, one Meningococcal immunization and completed their Hepatitis B series.

As a reminder, the Health History is a part of the student physical, be sure to have this section completed and signed by a parent.

***Make your summer care-free and turn in the physical to the elementary school before the

end of this school year!

Please feel free to call if you have any questions at 630-516-7829.

Thank you,
