Our Path Note Topic
One of the pillars of First Choice is the Whole Child. The Whole Child Pillar can be the part of the child that helps them focus on and prepare for the Academic and Career Pillars. One thing that may distract a learner from focusing on academics or career education is behaviors that stem from some sort of trauma one could experience in life. WASD has a Tier 3 intervention (MTSS) to help learners be more successful in the school setting if they have experienced a traumatic event in life.
The intervention that WASD has implemented over the last 4 years we call "INSPIRE". The INSPIRE Classroom is a Transition Classroom for using therapeutic strategies to help learners be more focused on learning in the regular classroom. The purpose is to build coping and self-regulation strategies in INSPIRE through therapy and support and then transition them back into the regular classroom for success.
WASD has a referral process for the INSPIRE classroom. It is called "WASD Referral Process for Transition Classroom (INSPIRE).
- Does your learner have a documented trauma?
- Yes--Please provide documentation of trauma No--Please complete the Adverse Child Experience (ACE) questionnaire with the learner.
- Please complete the Student Risk Screening Scale (SRSS-IE) (reviewing internalizing and externalizing behaviors learners may exhibit)
- Please complete the WASD Entrance Criteria for the Transition Classroom (a rubric reviewing current areas of behavioral/ relational/ self-regulation concerns)
- Please document other notable considerations for review (MTSS process for academics and behavior, medication impacts, attendance, office referrals, etc.)
- The WASD Transition Classroom Review Panel will analyze and make recommendations.
The building team (SAP or other) makes the determination whether or not to complete the forms and then whether to recommend to the Review Panel. Classroom teachers can fill out the student concerns form for the building team to review.

Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Eric DeAngelis. As WAMS Principal, Eric does an outstanding job at documenting and presenting personnel and learner information. Despite the daily challenges of leading WAMS, Eric's dedication and attention to detail in his paperwork is exceptional and most recently cited as a model to be duplicated by other school districts.
Join us in congratulating Eric DeAngelis as this week's Piece of the Puzzle!
New Policies
Suggested revisions and new policies come from the PA School Board Association, board members, staff, administration, and others. The proposed policy goes to the Policy Committee for review. The Policy Committee will either approve the proposed policy to go to full board for review and adoption, or will deny or wait for a different time to revisit it.
Even though it will not be weekly, stay tuned for any new and/or recently adopted policies in this section.
