ROOM E222 News
Week of August 28th
Our first week of third grade was a great success! Students worked hard to learn the classroom expectations and procedures. The first week of school was dedicated to building connections and learning Ms. Serven's expectations. We are off to a great start!

What's Happening This Week?
Reading/ ELA: We will begin our first unit of study, "Government for the People". In this unit, “Government for the People,” we’ll be exploring why people participate in government. We’ll look back at the history of voting rights and learn that when our country was first founded, only white men who owned property were allowed to vote. We’ll discuss how voting rights were extended to African Americans, women, young people, and other groups. And we’ll also read about how meetings are conducted in an orderly way, following Robert’s Rules of Order, which were named after Henry Robert. We’ll also learn how the Iroquois League of Nations was a model for the U.S. government. Some of the standards we will be covering are:
- I can ask and answer questions to show that I understand the stories that I am reading. RL.3.1
- I can ask and answer questions to show that I understand the information that I am reading. RI.3.1
- I can find the main idea of the information I read. RI.3.2

Big Ideas
Understanding place value can lead to number sense and efficient strategies for computing with numbers
Rounding is a valuable mental math tool when an approximate answer is acceptable.
Measurement processes are used in everyday life to describe and quantify the world.
Data displays describe and represent data in alternative ways
Some of the standards we will be covering include:
- I can round numbers to the nearest ten or 100. 3.NBT.1
- I can add and subtract numbers within 1000. 3.NBT.2
Here is the Parent Letter for Unit 1 Math, please read and keep for your reference!
Writing: Students will focus on what opinion writing is and will practice writing different opinion pieces related to various topics and texts.
Accelerated Reader (AR) and STAR Reading Assessment
**This is done in class, so students are responsible for completing them as a portion of our Reading/ELA/ components.
Students will take the Star Enterprise Lexile Assessment this week. We will create goals using the data collected from this assessment. I will send home a parent info sheet with suggested lexile range students should pick independent reading books from.
