REFLECTIONS ART PROGRAM DEI CALL
Social Justice, Racial Equity & the Arts
National PTA has been listening and seeking input from our students and school communities on how to best take action in support of social justice and racial equity. We believe that the arts are a great platform for our children and youth to elevate their voice. Our 2020-2021 Reflections theme, I Matter Because… has taken on a new meaning and allows us to connect with what so many of our Black and Brown children may be feeling today. And so, we invite Reflections artists of color and their allies to share artwork that expresses and affirms their beliefs and identities—as well as the importance of Black lives. Select works will be used to help us celebrate diversity in the arts.
Learn more here: https://rb.gy/ve4slg
Artwork should be uploaded by MARCH 1, 2021 using this form: https://rb.gy/slb9jz
Students can submit entries already done for Reflections or create new entries but there is no judging or awards for this new activity and only select entries will be included in the upcoming display.
WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, Don’t forget to submit pieces for Reed's Black History Month Art Exhibit too! Submit to bit/ly/WRMSBlackHistoryArt
Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and we know that you want to celebrate with your children. Here are some great resources to help you!
Check out Amanda Gorman performing the poem that made her Inaugural L.A. Youth Poet Laureate in 2014 -- one of the many moving videos, photos, historical articles and online talks sponsored by the Los Angeles Public Library during African American History Month. The moving video of Gorman reciting her poem “Neighborhood Anthem” is almost a dance, punctuated by her graceful, expressive gestures. Visit https://www.latimes.com/lifestyle/story/2021-02-04/2021-black-history-month-la-events-virtual-celebrations for more ways to celebrate!
Discover Los Angeles has a list of local museums and organizations with events and happenings related to Black History Month at https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/things-to-do/black-history-month-events-in-los-angeles
Celebrate some outstanding Black authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults by viewing the 2021 Coretta Scott King Award Winners:
This four-part series helps schools teach about black history by giving them resources that focus on aspects of black history and culture that aren’t centered on violence, trauma and struggle
Here is a list of 100 books by or about African Americans for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
