Total Eclipse - April 8th
I’m really excited about the total eclipse on Monday. We’ve been exploring what causes eclipses and how to make safe choices throughout this past week. The class also seems really excited. Please see below for some reminders from the office. The biggest thing to note is that, due to safety, students will not be able to be picked up after 12:00. This includes taking them home after the eclipse. If there is a change in going home, please be sure to notify myself and/or the office before noon as well.
Please be sure to send your child to school on Monday with…
- Raincoat or poncho (it may rain)
- Change of clothes in case it rains and they get soaked
- Towel or blanket to sit on
- Colander for projecting shadow patterns (optional)
One last note… Monday’s cafeteria menu is a sack lunch of corndog, carrots, and raisins or craisins, so be sure to send a lunch if this does not appeal to your child. We will be eating at 10:45 in the classroom and will have snack time after the eclipse.
Language Arts STAAR - Wednesday
STAAR Testing (the real one, not a practice) begins this week with Language Arts. We will be testing on Wednesday. I will be asking students to leave their Chromebooks at school on Tuesday, so if they normally keep their chargers at home, please be sure those are sent to school. If they absolutely need their Chromebook Tuesday afternoon or evening, please let me know and I will send it home, but please make sure it comes to school Wednesday fully charged.
Field Trip Chaperones Needed!!!
I am looking for 2 (no more, no less) chaperones for our LBJ library and museum field trip on May 7th. They have a policy of 1 adult for every 10 students. We will be in a group with just our class, which is 22 students, so I need 2 more adults with us. In order to make this as fair as I possibly can, please complete this Google Form if you are interested in chaperoning the field trip. If we have more than 2 parents interested, it will be limited to one parent per child and I will be drawing names. Also, no siblings or other children outside of Riojas 5th grade students may attend.
Please remember to be sure you have an approved volunteer application for the 23-24 school year. There is still plenty of time to get this done for the May 7th field trip.
End of Year 5th Grade Calendar
April 8: Solar Eclipse (we will be outside with glasses and have fun activities at school)
April 10 or 11: STAAR Reading
April 17: STAAR Science
April 30 or May 1: STAAR Math
May 7: LBJ Presidential Library Field Trip (limited chaperones)
May 17: Field Day
May 23: 5th Grade Swim Party (chaperones welcome)
May 24: 5th Grade Kickball Tournament (parents welcome to participate)
May 27: No School
May 28: End of Year Party
May 29: 5th Grade Awards & Promotion
Please remember some of these dates could (possibly, but not likely) change, so check back each week. Also, if you would like to chaperone a field trip, you will need a completed background check AT LEAST 2 weeks in advance (fill it out now if you think you might like to attend). https://www.applitrack.com/pflugerville/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Volunteer
