Solo/Ensemble Contest- Saturday, February 20th at Franklin Middle School in Wheaton

Solo and Ensemble Contest is now less than one month away. The contest will be held on Saturday, February 20th at Franklin Middle School (211 E. Franklin Street, Wheaton). We do not provide transportation to and from the school so please begin preparing arrangements for transportation.

Solo Times

On Friday, the students will be receiving a handout with their solo times and, if applicable, their ensemble times in addition to the rules and expectations for the contest. Be sure to ask your son or daughter for this information when they get home on Friday. Remember, this is not an all-day event for each student. Each student needs to arrive about 30 minutes before their solo time and is free to go as soon as their solo is over.

Practicing for Contest

Please make sure that your son or daughter is practicing their solo at home. The instruments must be taken home on weekends and on days before their band lesson. The kids all have a CD recording of their solo that came with their solo book. Make sure that they are listening to the CD and playing along with it to the best of their ability. Ms. Kiener and I will prepare the students to the best of our ability during lesson time but the success will ultimately be determined by the students’ work ethic preparing their solos at home.

Piano Accompanists

The students should soon begin practicing with their piano accompanists. We recommend 2-3 practices with the accompanist before the contest. If your son or daughter is using Mrs. Leonard as their accompanist, make sure that they sign up to meet with her at least twice after school at the Junior High before the contest. She has posted a sign-up sheet in the band room with times that begin next week. If your son or daughter is using Mrs. Sutton, you should heard from her already. If your son or daughter is using somebody else as their accompanist, please contact them to set up some rehearsal time.

Cabaret Night Raffle Tickets

On Saturday, February 13, the Lisle Junior High Jazz Bands and the Lisle Senior High Jazz Bands will perform an evening of Big Band jazz at our annual Cabaret Night. This is our program’s biggest fundraiser of the year. To help raise funds, the students received a stack of blue raffle tickets in band. These tickets are for the Cabaret Night Grand Raffle and we ask that they do their best to sell the entire stack of tickets. They should not go door to door- simply selling them to family and friends will suffice. There are some very cool prizes to be won in the grand raffle and you do not have to be present at Cabaret Night to win a prize. The big prizes are $300 cash, $400 to spend at Quinlan and Fabish, an overnight stay at the Oakbrook Hills Resort, and a fitbit. These tickets help raise funds for our band program for music, scholarships, clinics, and equipment.

The raffle tickets are $1 each but can also be sold in bulk for discounts- 6 tickets for $5, 12 tickets for $10, for all 25 tickets for $20. When the studentss sell a ticket to someone, that person should write their name, address, and phone number on the blue ticket and return it to the student along with the payment. Students will turn in all sold and unsold tickets with payment by Wednesday, February 10th.
