The Weekly Buzz

A Weekly Newsletter from Corner Middle School

Volume 2, Number 18: October 11, 2020

Thoughts from the Principal . . .

This will be a brief Weekly Buzz. We will send out a mid-week update on Thursday with more detailed information including the updated Alabama Department of Public Health Tool-Kit for Schools (which goes into effect on October 13th) and information on the return to five-day-a-week schooling. Families, please remember that you can swap your learning setting at the end of each quarter. We look forward to having all of our kids back on campus!!!

CMS Students To Complete Last Week of Hybrid Schedule

Corner Middle School students will compete their last week of the Hybrid A/B Schedule this week before returning to school full time on Monday, October 19th. Aside from the technology hiccups we had with Classlink and Schoology (which were district wide), we had a great week last week with our students! It was so great to see them back at school!

This week, students who are on campus will repeat their schedule for last week. Students with last names beginning with the letters A-L will come on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is a teacher work day and deep cleaning day. On Thursday and Friday, students whose last names begin with M-Z will come in to the school.

A couple of reminders . . .

1. All car riders will unload on the backside of the campus at the Burtram Gym and will be picked up there in the afternoons. Bus riders will unload and load in the front of the school.

2. Meals for students are still free (while funding lasts).

3. Students should bring their devices to class when they are on campus.

4. Students may have water with them only. No soft drinks or power drinks.

5. Students should wear their masks to school. We have received clarification on face shields. If an individual wears a face shield, he or she must have a mask on underneath (unless he or she is in a self-contained classroom on this campus or has a medical excuse).

6. Please charge Chromebooks each night before your student goes to bed so that it is ready to go each morning.

7. First period begins at 7:55. Students who come to school after 7:55 AM must be checked in by an adult in the main office.

8. Any student who has not received an ID badge by Tuesday (A-L) or Friday (M-Z) should notify the main office.

LET THE LEARNING CONTINUE!!!

CMS Student Council Extends Campaign Season

The Corner Middle School Campaign Week began October 5th. Sponsor, Melinda Boyd, has decided that we are going to extend the campaign period out an extra week to give the bulk of the students and opportunity to be ON CAMPUS to vote. Any student that wishes to run for student council should sign up using the Google Form and submit a 1-2 minute video outlining why he or she would be a good representative for the grade level. Students will watch the videos during advisory time and voting will take place during Advisory on Oct. 21st. Interested students should email Mrs. Boyd at mboyd@jefcoed.com

Homecoming T-Shirts Sale Supports Veteran's Day Program

Each year we do the homecoming shirt sale to help with our annual Veteran's Day program. Unfortunately this year, we will not get to host the program. This would have been our 25th year to do so. Instead we are going to place flags for each person in the community that has served in the military in front of the competition gym. Each flag will have a person's name/branch of service/ and if they served during peacetime or war.

We will be placing them along with a banner the weekend before Veteran's Day. To help pay for the flags, we are selling t-shirts. We hope to raise enough money to not only pay for the flags, but also make a goody bag and set up a tent for them to drive up to and receive a small token from us as they visit the flags.

Any member of the community who would like a letter sent to be sent to a veteran, please send Mrs. Jennifer Harris their name and address at jharris@jefcoed.com. Anyone wanting a vetteran's name on a flag in our display they can email her the name, branch of service, wars or conflicts.

Please support our annual celebration of our veterans by purchasing a Homecoming t-shirt. Please contact the office or Mrs. Harris for details.
