Room 103 Newsletter
12/9/15
I hope your December is going smoothly. The kids have been doing a great job with their reading. It's always gratifying to see them start to recognize words, use their strategies, and feel proud of themselves. I know that most of the students are really enjoying their book bags. Thank you for reading with them every night and getting the bags back to me on Fridays. If you remember, please take a moment to fill out the observation form. I know it can be time consuming, but even just checking the boxes off gives me a lot of insight to how the kids are doing at home. The Kindergartners will have their first formal reading assessment in January.
The past couple of weeks we have been exploring weight and capacity. The Kindergartners compared the weight of objects using a balance scale, made predictions on which items would be heavier, and tested out the equivalent of the objects weight in unifix cubes. We also just learned what the word "capacity" means. We've looked at different size jars to compare the amount of space each container had, and made estimations on how many beads the containers could hold. Besides continuing on with our measurement unit, we are practicing looking at numbers that are "hidden: inside of a larger number. For example, 5 and 2 are hidden inside of 7. This is something we will do all year long to boost number sense and prepare for adding.
I hope you've all blocked out 45 minutes to come to our Pattern Fashion Show next Thursday (12/17). We'll start first thing in the morning, the kids will be ready to show off their styles, then we'll have some breakfast together. If you can contribute to the breakfast, I've put a sign up sheet in front of the classroom. See you all there.
We had an exciting visit from the Berkeley Fire Dept. Check out the pictures below!
See you soon,
